Maybe nerd is too specific. I just mean “online people” I guess. But I personally have a focus on tech, games, video, etc. It’s something I’m increasingly self aware about, after spending the time since 2020 more online. Including in synchronous online spaces.

The spaces I’m talking about felt very different to me 15+ years ago. And the synchronous space I’m talking about felt very different 9 years ago.

Anyway, you’re not wrong. Your framing is still the people I mean. And now I see their type around me in more spaces. And yeah, it’s funny how it’s always a baselsss ban.

This is one of my biggest complaints about Lenny lemmy. And it has given me a new perspective on those around me in nerd spaces. 😔

I really feel like Lenny amplifies and concentrates it in a way that makes it more visible at times. And GTA6 is an example.

The stuff about it helping with various addiction situations is real. But I don’t suspect it’s a good idea to use it off label for that. Just that it’s one of the many side effects.

I think a lot of people think they have ADHD when they really have roller coaster blood sugar or very high A1C.

And I’ve come to believe this based on lived experience. I now think a small percentage of the uptick we have seen over the last few decades of people believing they have ADHD, or getting diagnosed with it, is due to this.

People should probally be screened for metabolic issues when they are being assessed. Especially if they are coming to it as an adult.

That’s a great question. And I don’t have an answer for large open platforms.

It does make me yearn for smaller local communities that are actually communities and not just open spaces anyone can slither into. You know? It makes me realize how online spaces are not healthy. They were fine for a fleeting few years. But now they are co-opted and nasty.

It’s an aspirational statement without practical easy action to take, yes.

They always use the word “trust” for the manipulation of Reddit conversations. Fucking ghouls.

We need vetted online spaces that keep that shit out.

That context was totally different. Broadcast TV is not just a collection isolated clips you can search for and pull up. But the internet is. And we could just get or share the clip direct from the source without it being edited and packaged into influencer content. Maybe it’s not simple or easy sometimes, but it’s usually possible.

Those shows of the past were what you tuned into. On the internet, we can share direct pieces of video and audio and images with each other. The commentary is optional. On broadcast television, the context had to come from the packaging. On the internet we can provide text based context alongside the videoclip. We can organize it into a database. We can share it in specific contexts like communities.

influencers packaging clips like this is different, and the person you replied to is correct. People can enjoy this woman fine and follow her for her commentary. But suggesting this is how we should share information because it’s how broadcast television worked before the internet is justifying something we don’t need to justify. And it’s doing so with an onerous comparison, in my opinion.
