  • I finished Bubsy 4D and moved on to Yooka-Replaylee. Initially Yooka-Replaylee hadn’t hooked me that much, but I’m having fun just now. It looks so good on the Switch 2 with the latest updates. I’ll (try to) finish it before Star Fox comes out. I played the Star Fox demo and it looks amazing, it’ll be my main game once it comes out on the 25th.

I got NieR: Automata The End of YoRHa Edition for the Switch after so many recommendations (and seeing it was low stock where I buy my games). I only played for a bit over an hour and enjoyed it. But it’s going to my backlog. I’ll save it for when I can give my full attention to it and not have to play it along 6 months or a year.

On the retro front, I’m playing Rockman & Forte for Super Famicom.

  • Horizon Chase Turbo is great. I got the physical version and really enjoyed it. The music by Barry Leitch is incredible. I used to play Top Gear on the SNES a lot, a friend used to have it. It’s definitely made with lots of love and respect for the original Top Gear (it was massive in Brazil!). Barry Leitch also wrote the music for the SNES game, and he pays homage to some tunes in Horizon Chase. Now I feel like going back to playing it 😁

Horizon Chase Turbo 2 I only got digital on Switch. I don’t think there was a physical release at all. Unfortunately, it didn’t come out in a great state and didn’t manage to hook me as much as the first one. I think it never got an update to fix some of its issues, I never went back to playing it. Unfortunately, the studio Aquiris was acquired by Epic and apparently everyone was put to work on Fortnite stuff (not sure if this is true, but read it on the community discord).

  • I hope Star Fox is something similar to what Metroid Prime Remastered was for Retro Studios. They used it as a project to get a new team to learn how to make a Metroid Prime. This could be a project to learn how to make Star Fox on Switch 2. So it’ll hopefully be a new beginning with more titles in the future following the same style.

I don’t think we’ll hear about new 3D Mario this year if we didn’t hear anything around the movie. Like Zelda, it’s probably taking ages because they’ll make something proper and big. Mario needs to implement some new game mechanic, who knows what they’ll come up with.

  • Hopefully some more Bubsy 4D on Switch 2 and Top Gear Rally 2 on Analogue 3D this weekend. I received the physical version of Disney Afternoon Collection for Switch today, so I’ll try to play some of that too. I played most of these games already when I was a kid. I had Chip N’ Dale (but lost it) and own Duck Tales on the NES (played the remaster on Wii U too). The rest I either rented or played at friends’ houses, so it’ll be fun to go back to replay them and see how many I can finish.

  • The Analogue 3D is great! I got a black one in the first wave. Of course as soon as I received it (after months of delays and no communication from Analogue), they announced the color editions. But I don’t mind, I like it as it looks similar to my original N64. The overclocking is great and they added save states with the latest firmware update, so it’s amazing.

Bubsy 4D is fun! I’m only on the second world, but it’s been good so far. I think it’s aimed at replaying to discover all the yarn balls and blueprints and speedrunning. But I take my time exploring each stage once, and still find it entertaining.

  • This week I started a new career in Top Gear Rally 2 for the Nintendo 64 on the Analogue 3D. I had this game when I was younger and going back to it now, I was impressed that it felt like riding a bike. I hadn’t played in so many years, yet I felt back at home. I’ll probably finish this career eventually before I move on to any other N64 game.

On Switch 2 I got the physical edition of Bubsy 4D this week. I had played the demo and it convinced me to buy it. I haven’t had enough time to get into the main game yet. So I’m hoping to get some gaming hours this weekend with Bubsy.

  • Yes, but the importance given to the prologue could be hinting at more. Maybe we’ll be able to play some missions with James McCloud in the past. Maybe there’s more development on what happened to him once you finish the game. Maybe in this version, you rescue him in Venom. Or maybe:

    spoiler

It ends being just like previous games where it’s not clear if he’s still dead and showed up as a ghost or what.

Who knows. I think it’s cool we’re getting more cinematic stuff with this saga anyway!

  • And also when Switch 2 has just nothing going for it.

Everything can’t appeal to everyone all the time and that’s ok. For me, playing Tears of the Kingdom and Breath of the Wild at 60fps was worth it. I loved Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, Cyberpunk 2077 and Donkey Kong Bananza. I enjoyed Metroid Prime 4 too, I haven’t tried it on the Switch 1, but it looks and runs amazing on the Switch 2.

I do agree the design of the Switch 2 is very conservative, even compared to the colored joycons of the first one. But that’s what made sense to them to make after the success of Switch 1. There’s still some quirkiness there with the mouse controls and the Virtual Boy accessory (whether this last one is worth it or not, is a different discussion, and also the ownership of the games…). They didn’t have to do a reproduction of one of their biggest flops so you can play it with the Switch, yet they did.

The Game Cube is awesome, quirky and looks amazing, but it didn’t sell well at the time.

They’ve been on a cycle, they’re the most creative when they’re not doing well (Game Cube to Wii, Wii U to Switch). I don’t believe they’ll just go into PlayStation mode and keep releasing Nintendo Switch 3, 4, but we’ll see.

It’s fine if the Switch 2 is not for you. Maybe eventually a new 3D Mario or a new Zelda will get you excited, maybe you’re over Nintendo and that’s ok. But for some of us, the Nintendo Switch 2 has a lot going for it and we’re really enjoying it.
