While I would love one to carry my dog with me, the change in handling will probably force me to build a trailer for her instead.

I also have a front rack, attached to the bike frame, a lot like the portola platform rack. I just love it, use it almost every time I go out. I never use my rear rack anymore.

I still use my rear rag bags but more for stuff like repair kit, spare tube, poncho, etc. Most of the stuff I’m actively using is attached to or in the front rack.

The portola rear rack looks way more sturdy than what’s on my Aventon Aventure.2 because it’s welded onto the frame. I wish mine was like that. I’d trust it a lot more, especially on these super bumpy barely maintained pavement and dirt roads I live off. I guess it would be good enough for repair kit and stuff though. Good call.

Supposedly it’s rated for 120 lbs but there are other racks out there that can hold quite a bit and aren’t welded. Priority sells the Axion Streamliner DLX which supports 110 lbs for example.

I used to keep my dog in a shopping basket with a floor and safety harness built in. Had it fixed to my cargo rack, but then he grew up and no longer fits.

I’ve been thinking about using a wider one, but I’m a little worried he’d jump off. On the other hand, I saw this bike touring guy (Dave) do it with his dog (Mira) and it seemed to work ok.

Trailers are definitely more viable though, and far more affordable.
