Ive never in my life heard or seen anyone talk about this movie. I saw it about 20 years ago, and I recently rewatched the tape. Man, it holds up. And Robins performance is so great.
If you haven’t heard of it, its a good watch. And it makes you think a little about what makes us human.
Clanker propaganda
This is Earth, not Super Earth. Robot racism is not cool here. Unless they are LLMs.
“Remember, kids, roleplaying as a fascist is fine, but being one IRL is bad!” < words spoken before your entire playerbase that is on Twitter revolts because half of them ARE fascists
Any time I run in to one of the genuine fascist types in Helldivers, I literally will merc them until they kick me or they run out of lives. I will drop all my samples, and blast them when they are literally in the ship waiting for extraction. Fascism is only fun when it’s by Paul Verhoeven (i.e. Starship Troopers), or in a game where it’s satire. If you genuinely believe in it, I don’t miss out on anything by ruining their fun and dropping from a mission, since I’m already maxed out at Lvl 150.
You are doing the Lord’s work, Helldiver.
Yeah, I enjoy the clankers meme as much as anyone, but it’s not hard to see how it could quickly end up in a dark place. Consider this. How hard would it be for the term “clankers” to drift from referring to the LLMs themselves to instead refer to the people who use LLMs? I could certainly see the word being adopted as an epithet for the fools that produce AI slop.
And now we’ve shifted from just joking about robots to actually referring to living human beings with a slur.
I’ve heard some people with more sci-fi prothestics (or even any at all) be referred to as clankers, and I’m just like… Bro. Our skeletons are made of calcium, which is a metal. Most of our biological processes use electricity. We’re literally just as much of clankers as robots are.
Haha!
I think it’s a great film, wonderful even. Robin Williams really pulls you in. That said, when it comes to Robot movies, nothing brings me to tears quite like - A.I. Artificial Intelligence.
It’s a Chris Columbus film - who is one of the GOATs for family movies with heart (Home Alone, The first Harry Potter film, etc.) and I love it, too.
Yea, good movie, timeless plot
It’s an adaptation of an Isaac Asimov short story. I found it a pretty good adaptation and Robin Williams really did a great job embodying Andrew.
I remember not liking it because I thought it was a terrible adaptation with a bunch of Hollywood tropes and stuff added in. That was back in the 90s when I was young and overly critical about that kind of thing though, so might have been overly critical.
It’s actually based on the novel by Asimov and Robert Silverberg, which is based on the short story. I don’t remember seeing the movie, definitely read the book and short story.
I remember loving that movie when I saw it. But you’re right no one ever talks about it. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it just playing on TV or even as an option on a streaming service. If it is it’s very deep I guess.
I remember when they tried to market the movie to the public. Half the preview ads made the movie look like a goofy family comedy. I think it turned people off to seeing it when it was in theaters. I found the movie to be much deeper than that.
Yeah I remember being disappointed when seeing it
I feel like it’s always caught flak and rated lower than it deserves.
It’s one of my favorite robot movies.
I actually just watched it again a couple months ago.
I think it’s one of Robin Williams’ best movies; his voice is so emotive that it made Andrew relatable even though his actual face is covered up through the first half of the film.
The themes are great, too. I especially liked what it says about living as one’s authentic self despite society’s expectations & how we should trust that one’s described lived experience is genuine.
It was a wonderful film that warmed my heart, but lacked explosions, epic car chases, and the main character had no Austrian accent, which is okay I guess.
It really really enjoyable. Definitely not something people imagine Robbin Williams playing in, but definitely one of those movies where he shows how well he can act and pick a great movie to be apart of. I also agree with you that I don’t hear about it much at all.
One of the first movies I bought with my own money. Loved it.
It’s 5 dollars to buy on Apple TV right now
Saw it when I was younger. Was so bored I thought it was 4 hours long
Great movie, the book is good too, but the movie is great
One of my favorites. Amazing she was elected president of the UN after finally catching Carmen Sandiego.
I watched it a few years ago and enjoyed it. Robin Williams did a great job playing the main character.
