If you are willing to provide the area/industry you are interested, we maybe able to direct you better. I don’t know of any (general or specific) communities off the top of my head, but there was just a post about getting ideas for new communities.

Assuming there is not already a community that fits your purposes, can you provide some more details on what you want to get out of community? “Help and networking” is a bit vague to work with.

Additionally, would you be interested in starting and modding such a community? No pressure/expectation either way, just gathering potentially useful information.

I’ve gotten a few of them. I’m pretty certain they are spam or will be spam in the future. I block them.

Dbzer0 is silenced on the piefed.social instance. I believe that you should (edit: not!) be able to read this comment (I’m not on dbzer0 but my instance is also Silenced 😆, so if you can’t see a dbzer0 user, you can’t see me too).

.zip admins do make changes to the code (ex. removed the vote limiter). So they may have gone in and removed or altered the list.

As a slight clarification, Rimu specifically confirmed the change (voting restrictions) were not due to bandwidth concerns, but rather to curtail certain users from voting “too much”.

Also, confirmed the users in questions were not bots, just user who voted a lot (I’m in that category). My instance removed the limiter within a couple days of the update being implemented.

Maybe check out NodeBB. My recollection is that it’s a federated server software for forums that can interface with at least Mastodon and Piefed (probably Lemmy and Mbin too).

I believe I’ve seen some content from a forum in the past, but it’s tough to tell, as I think they just show up the same as any other threadiverse instance (a post in a community on an instance).

I’m not sure how you’d search for them though…

You might be interested in the Pylova Piefed fork. It’s from the contributor that this post about Rimu deleting the other side of the story is from (Quokka).

I haven’t had many interactions with either of them (Rimu and Quokka), but if I had guess which is the problematic one in a situation is, I’d guess Rimu.

Yeah, it definitely feels, to me, like the current world/society is built to be competitive rather than cooperative :(

I would suggest a few things. First, be genuinely open minded to the discussion/topic (as in your opinion can change with a good enough argument.

Second, I would suggest using “feeling” language as much as possible. Examples are: “I feel like that will cause an issue with…”, “my understanding is…”, “my thoughts are…”, “from what I’ve seen/read the setup is …”, etc. From my perspective, feeling language lowers the “absoluteness” of statements and makes conversions easier by changing them from arguing absolute truths, to discussing lived experiences.

Third would be to reframe the discussion/argument from “you vs them” to the two of you vs a problem/issue and you both are working together to find the answer. This somewhat goes with being open minded.

Fourth, I don’t think works too well in online discussions, but in person I find starting from a base situation and asking the other person their thoughts on it, and adding your own, works well. So, start with a base situation and then adding a little complexity each time you both agree on the outcome and reasoning. Once you’ve found your divergence point you can start having your discussion about the pros/cons of different approaches/solutions to that specific situation.

My understanding, using the federation-email analogy, defederation is like yahoo mail and gmail users not being able to send and receive emails from each other. In this case lemmy.world and lemmy.ml can’t see each others users/communities/posts/comments/votes (someone can correct me if I’m mistaken about any part).

[email protected] just made a post about instance defederations. TL:DR of the post is only 3 instances/servers have any significant defederation (>5%). 2 “tankie” instances (lemmygrad.ml [67%] and hexbear.net [64%]) and the porn instance (fedinsfw.app [13%]).

• Not sure we have a Hobbydrama, but it’s also not my interest, so I could have blocked it.
• Cursedcrochet looks fun. We have an active knitting community, but probably not enough activity/users for a specific “cursedcrochet” community at this point. Also have a semi-active leatherwork community, if that’s of interest.
• Wunkus seems great. I think the closest match we may have would be Scrungy Cats, but there could be communities I don’t know about.
• Also, in a different comment someone mentioned the solarpunk communities (basically anything on the slrpnk.net instance), I’m a big fan of those, and think they’re worth checking out.

The threadiverse (roughly the reddit-like part of the fediverse) is pretty small (~43k MAU), so if something doesn’t exist and you want it to, your probably going to have to start and build it yourself.

I was kind of off-put by that initially, but I kind of like it now. It’s kind of like building your own little space and people can come check it out and see what you’ve been building and contribute if they feel like it. I created fedilytics (Fediverse-Analytics) a couple months ago because I was curious how the fediverse was doing. It’s not particularly active with other people (got first non-me post yesterday!), but I mostly built it for myself and enjoy anytime someone stops in to talk in the comments.

If you do decide to make a community in the future, I’d suggest making the post in the community and then cross-posting it, to a larger relevant community, to increase traffic to your post (as many people just stick to their subscribed feed).

If you provide some of your interests/hobbies, we can probably be more helpful.

That being said, I think these are a few active and interesting communities:

Regarding places to avoid, I don’t think anyplace needs to be avoided, per say. Politics can be problematic, if you go into those posts.

There’s no real algorithm, so you need to curate your own feed. In general, I’d suggest, if you see a community that could interest you, just subscribe. You can always unsubscribe later (if it turns out not to be what you want), but getting a denser “good stuff” home feed is beneficial.

By the same token, I’d suggest blocking communities you have zero interest in (helps filtering, so you come across more content you are interested in when browsing “All”). If you run into a problematic user, report (if they have done something reportable), block, and move on.

If 2 communities are posting the same content and you get tired of seeing double, I’d suggest removing the community from the bigger or flagship instance (ex. Lemmy.ml, Lemmy.world, Piefed.Social).

This would have the effect of distributing the communities across the threadiverse rather than having them bunch up on a few. A problem with bunching can be if an instance goes down, they take their users/communities with them. Most of the medium/large instances in the threadiverse are stable, but it has happened in the past (Lemm.ee).

My understanding is this should be much less of a problem in the future, they are working on making user profiles and communities transferable between instances/servers.

Note: there is an active autism community, if that’s of interest to you.

If you can’t see it because of a ban, you can try opening the post in a unlogged in browser. You wouldn’t be able to comment, but you should be able to see it.

Otherwise, I’d say just search for it in the fediverse.world community, should be easy to find.

My understanding is threadiverse links allow you to go to a post via your own instance, rather than opening a new tab/window/browser.

Some clients can handle threadiverse links, some can’t. Usually I put both in, but didn’t this time.

It seems tesseract’s dev put so some code in their frontend to DDoS dbzero (there’s a post about it in one of the “fediverse” communities).

Your issues may be related to that. What you’re seeing may be “Anubis” or something similar (not really familiar with what the not/scraping defenses look like).

Might be worth pinging an admin to get their thoughts. Hope you’re able to solve the issue.

If you are going to be the main poster initially and for the foreseeable future, probably a genre you are interested in.

I’d also suggest making the post in the new/niche community and then cross post it into a more general/main/popular community (ex. Books).

Apparently I like War, Mystery, and Comedy. List:

• Andor: Is great, even if you aren’t a Star Wars fan. Each 3 episode arc is better than the last. Only planned as 1 season, but did so well they made a Season 2 and Season 2 is better. You can use Rogue One as a cap to the series.

• Veronica Mars: watched all of it for the first time this year. It holds up 20+ years later.

• Ted Lasso: Comedy about a college American Football coach coaching English Football/soccer.

• The Good Place: Strangely a philosophy heavy comedy. It slows in places, but is absolutely worth watching.

• Schmitt’s Creek: Comedy about unlikeable rich people becoming poor. It takes a bit to start, but each season is better than the last and nails the landing.

Possibles:

• Altered Carbon (Season 1): Great murder mystery set in a cyberpunk, dystopian future.

• Shogun: Medieval Japan samurai “game of thrones”-esk show. Only planned as 1 season, but did so well they are making a Season 2.

• Band of Brothers: War show about American rangers in WW2.
