I think it’s a really weird confluence of acceptance seeking mixed with internalized homophobia from a religious upbringing. There’s such a strong self hatred they can’t help but take it out on others, because they feel:
Jealous that they don’t get to suck cock too (or for the ladies, have a meal at the bearded clam).
Jealous of the self acceptance others have had. That is, if they’re gay, “why don’t they hate themselves for that too?”
Enacting violence against someone like that is a perverse proxy for violence against the part of themselves they hate the most.
