Other red states have made similar moves in blue cities even as crime in those cities has decreased sharply from pandemic-era highs. And now President Donald Trump is borrowing from the playbook, sending federal agents and National Guard troops to patrol the nation’s capital and threatening to do the same elsewhere.
“It’s part of the narrative that these cities are incapable of administering public safety even though crime is on a downswing since the pandemic,” said Jorge Camacho, an associate research scholar in law at Yale Law School. “You still need a foil to blame for problems that are real and imagined. I expect to see that wielded for the foreseeable future.”
Anyone that isn’t a conservative should be stocking up on guns and ammo right about now.

I do support responsible gun ownership, but if it gets to that point I don’t know if there’s much of a point bringing a gun to a Palantir drone fight. That doesn’t mean I don’t think people should arm themselves, just being realistic in terms of what you as an individual can really do against a government contractor that already uses this stuff against civilians and children in other countries without thinking twice about it. I’d hope I would be long gone by then or at least in the process of getting asylum somewhere.
As far as not ending up on a list, Louisiana loves to pretend that it’s some kind of concealed carry and gun ownership rights utopia, but I’ve heard some concerns from local 2A fans about the AI tech in the privately owned Project Nola surveillance cameras that are all over the place. Pretty sure if they want to know who’s armed and who’s not they can find out pretty quickly.

It’s more that the unpopulated areas are begging for help by staging this coup. The cities have all the help they could need since they so vastly outnumber the rural areas.

I’m a leftist living in a deep red state. I’m prepared to leave if things get bad enough. I’ll move to Oregon. Sure, it’s more expensive, but I think it will be well worth it.

I know this area VERY well and i know where to gain supporters and start a militia. I have all the experience needed to teach others, so i’m not worried. Going to the protests in the deepest red cities has shown me that i have thousands of like minded people around me that will also fight.

I know, but if it can avoid violence then I think self deporting is a good alternative to civil war. I’d rather a peaceful split up than a bloody fight. I don’t want to kill conservatives, I just don’t want to be ruled by them.
Edit: but I also don’t feel overly attached to the state I’m in because I didn’t grow up here. Although, the state I did grow up in is also a deep red state, but I didn’t feel any great loyalty to that state either. IDK, I can understand why some people don’t want to give up their home, but war is so destructive. I mean, how much of your state would you be willing to destroy in your war for it?
I moved to Oregon two years ago. Most cost of living websites say Oregon is more expensive than Florida. Where I was previously. It’s not.
Though I have been told to tell others Oregon is a hell scape and it’s best to not move here.
I worry that if I just moved anywhere else in the U.S. there might come a time when blue states get invaded by red and the same problem I ran away from just follows me there.

I know I can’t just go to another country without a job, and I really don’t have the money to just pack up everything and leave anyway. A friend of mine recently tried to do this and got turned away at the Canadian border bc they didn’t believe she was just coming to stay for short visit.
It think the POTUS can only treat immigrants like garbage, shit talk other countries, and repeatedly threaten to invade them so many times before they start to keep receipts.
Outside of Portland, Eugene, and Corvallis, Oregon is surprisingly* backwards. There’s a whole movement to take basically all of the rural parts of the state and incorporate into Idaho. I know. They want to be part of Idaho of all fucking places.
*I shouldn’t say it’s surprising, actually. The territory was founded on the principle of being a whites-only enclave.
Yeah, that’s how a lot of “blue” states are. As anyone who’s been to Bakersfield or Fresno could tell you.
And conversely, large cities are mostly cosmopolitan and filled with liberals and progressives, even in “red” states.
That’s the big problem with the idea that we could just split the country up along state lines and wash our hands of each other in some sort of amicable divorce.

I don’t doubt it, but even still Oregon generally is much more aligned with my values than any red state I can think of. Plus, if there is a large exodus of leftists and liberals out of red states, I think many will choose to go to the Pacific coast states, and that will only increase the ratio in those states in favor of “us.” If those folks would rather be a part of Idaho, they can move to Idaho. No one’s stopping them.
As an Oregonian, it’s not too bad. Parts of Portland really suck these days, but some parts are still nice. The areas outside of Portland can be amazing. And the food scene is nice.

It also normalizes the behavior. Places that seem “normal” go, “what’s the big deal? not much has changed.” Other places get used to the nazis and try to survive in their new shittier universe. Keep boiling the frog until everyone’s fucked. Headlines like that also help normalize. Real easy to find the media that is kowtowing based on the language they choose. This type of media should be banned by all.
It’s WaPo so not really surprising. It’s owned by Bezos now. It seems like the stories are often buried by the misleading headlines, so I’m not sure how much say the journalists are being given in the final headline, especially these days.
Sometimes the headline that appears in a news feed or even the publication’s main page will be completely different than what’s in the actual article once it’s opened.
To be clear though, the watered down language and headlines were definitely a problem that pre-existed Trump. Just saying I’m not sure how much control the journalists actually have now that oligarchs bought up all the news papers.
I still think it’s important to point this stuff out bc if we ever get back to a pre-Trump 2.0 baseline for free speech, we cannot go back to the completely “neutral” headlines and language when convenient while also pushing a big bad narrative against others that don’t deserve it bc it’s convenient for sponsors.
And that’s what the title should be. “Cracking down” implies there is something that needs cracking down on.
Our state absolutely hates the small city/big town I’m in and has spent the past 5+ years targeting us specifically with legislative ways of making our lives worse.

Idk, I grew up in a rural society. I’m definitely not the most cultured individual, but I also don’t really consider myself to be that much of a backwards moron.
I do think there are way more people in the U.S. who have just never had the kind of opportunities or resources to travel anywhere else and experience different things that people in places like Europe get to do, and it tends to keep people in rural areas from being as open to things that seem unfamiliar to them.
Like I’ve met a lot of just regular working class people from Europe that did student exchange programs in high school, and ended up spending part of a school year in places like rural Arkansas or Tennessee. I can’t say I’ve met many Americans from a working class family that left their rural town in Arkansas or TN and spent a summer somewhere in Europe though. It seems like the kind of thing that only really happens during a war or deployment.
I think assholes are just kind of universal, but unfortunately they’re also usually the loudest and most pushy. You don’t always get to hear the voices of the individuals that might feel like they’re not represented by the group they’re automatically lumped into.
