I never thought I’d see fear spread so far and fast. Next year’s midterm elections are now crucial for the Democratic party – and for democrats everywhere, says Guardian columnist Timothy Garton Ash
America is NOT (and never had been) a political monolith, and we extremely all do not support trump (look at his approval ratings if nothing else).
America is the monolith. Russia is the monolith. Israel is the monolith.
United Russia isn’t invading Ukraine, Russia is. Likud isn’t performing genocide in Gaza, Israel is. The Republican Party isn’t waging economic, military, climate, and human-rights warfare among its former allies and fostering a world war for profit - The United States of America is.
So I’m sorry you get lumped together while in opposition but I ask what people outside the US are supposed to do while we wait for the bombs? Smile on Lemmy and save our complaints for people who clearly identify as Trump supporters? I ask what you think of first when you think of a 1930s German, and then add on top decades of freedom fanaticism and foreknowledge in the form of basic WWII history.
Guilty until proven innocent? Sure, but in the setting of a confession (the (second) election) I think the world can be forgiven for assuming the flag stands for what it’s doing when commenting.
Again, I’m sorry. I don’t want to be mean to people or stereotype either but I really don’t think Americans on either side understand how fucking scared we are, and it will be under one flag that you come to kill my family for minerals or some shit just like it’s the Russian flag bombing Ukraine and the Israeli over the ruins of Gaza. Our bestest friend and the kid who took all the equipment because he was “the bestest” has joined the bullies and taken all the shit. Punches are next and I think we can be forgiven lashing out.
Of course you can be forgiven, and believe me I understand your fear. It’s scary being here too, my political ideology was basically declared a terrorist ideology yesterday and met with calls from our government for mass violence against people who hold my views.
That said, I dont hold all Germans responsible for WWII. I don’t hold all isrealis responsible for Gaza or all Russians responsible for Ukraine. I think the people who dissent against those regimes living in those countries are the best positioned to meaningfully do something about their governments, and even if they haven’t done enough to fully end the problems yet they are impactful. At least Russia and Ukraine today have active protests and civil disobedience that help if nothing else push back against the internal propaganda engines in their countries
At a time when everything seems bleak, I think finding allies where you can is more important than ever. Some of those allies will come from within. My understanding is people living in Germany who didn’t like hitler were instrumental to his downfall once Germany was meaningfully being invaded.
You can and should be worried about what the fascist USA is capable of, but I promise whatever there is that can be done against it I will be there to help (for whatever that’s worth as a non military person who is also trying to provide for my family while resisting fascism). I wish it could be more.
