I was lucky enough to get within 10’ of this guy. I had scared off two others earlier.

I got a nice shot of him engaging his nictitating membrane.

Yup, the fact that he sort of wraps his tongue around his skull to cushion the impact is wild.

There’s at least one in the hollow I frequent, but I swear they’re the animal most aware of my presence. I’ve surprised fox, deer, and countless small game, but these fellas never let me close.
Beautiful. Fun fact I learned recently: woodpeckers’ tongues are wrapped all the way to the back and top of the head, and some of their skull bones are spongey, to absorb all the impact from pecking wood. Nature is so dang cool.
