I’m delighted that our Prime Minister clearly got under Trump’s skin with his speech. He certainly didn’t get his wits from America.
I watched his whole speech and the Q&A afterwards a short time ago and, as an Australian, all I could think was that if I were Canadian I’d have been very proud to call him my PM. He has such a sensible approach to the idea that the world has irrevocably changed and that middle powers need to band together to stand up to bullies like the USA. He correctly highlighted that the current circumstances are frightening and challenging but has a clear vision for the path forward.
I, like many others, was concerned that an ex-banker and leader of two federal reserves would just tow the neoliberal line but he’s shown real courage and vision. I hope he continues to back up the rhetoric with action that’s both in the best interests of Canadians but also in the better interests of other middle power nations.
I think his open acknowledgment of the until-now taboo points that the “rules based international order” has intrinsically been significantly self-serving, and has consistently favored the global north over the global south, and has overall exacerbated global wealth inequality was pretty incisive and important as well. The facts have been fairly obvious for a while now, and he had the stones to call a spade a spade.

Which is also a complete lie. The ‘surplus’ is Canadian crude oil being imported by American oil companies, refined and then exported at high profit. Canada is actually getting screwed. It would be a trade deficit if the taps stopped, and is another example of how a US benefit of Free Trade is being misrepresented to the MAGA cult by the US regime. Once the investments are in place to repatriate oil processing, I expect Carnie will be discussing the need to turn off the taps. I am not sure if retrofitting old refineries would accelerate the process as it would take at least a decade to build from new. In any case, it would freak out the Koch family (one of the families that actually run the US), so I expect there is a full strategy being developed and played out.
