Right now the user count Lemmys is comparatively tiny when held up against reddit - but the user count isn’t the thing that makes a social media site, it’s the engagement
So even if you’re used to lurking, try to get a little more active! Post memes, vote on posts, talk in the comments, whatever!
If people come here and see activity, content, and discussions, they’re more likely to stay and contribute their own - if they come and see a ghost town, they’ll just go back to reddit
Cool, I didn’t know we could embed images in posts and they’d show up inline. I wonder how long that will last, haha.
Oo oo I Wana try.
-edit- don’t use big pictures.

good to know!
After 14 years on reddit I’m tired of watching it die, the death of Apollo is what pushed me over the edge, I loved Apollo. I’ve been browsing in here for the past few days. I like it. Trying to get used to it. Fuck reddit and u/spez all of the situation was trash. Thank you all for recommending this site!! I’m excited to be apart of it!
damn happy to have you here!
Ditto for RIF on Android dying. Lemmy will take some getting used to, but I refuse to support reddit for killing my user experience.
I’ll post my puppy everyone likes puppies.
I don’t often have anything to add, but here is my buddy.
unlurks
I like your puppy.
Me too!
that’s not a puppy, he’s too big
Here’s my kitty cat Kira
This is me not lurking
Watch me engage with someone
Watch me watch you engage with someone
This is all terribly engaging!
This is your friendly neighborhood deviant trying not to lurk
Oh hey how’s agoin
Engaging…
Big time introverted lurker on reddit, since here is a much smaller community, I don’t feel so intimidated. I’ll try to be more active here. Let’s do this guys, let’s create a great place for all the Reddit Refugees. FUCK u/Spez!
FUCK u/Spez!
Hey now, /u/spez is a hero - without him, Lemmy would never have taken off like it has lol
but i don’t have anything to say
other than fuck spez of course
'tis enough, friend!
Rip reddit :(
Long time no see, Lemmy. I hope Reddit ending is for the best, and I hope all my precious communities migrate to open source software.
I couldnt say it better. Social media must be controlled by the people using it. There is no other option except bad products promoting dangerous ideas to keep people rich.
Alright sir, I shall upvote and comment whenever I feel I have something useful to add!
It’s just basic Lemmyquette.
perfect!
Task failed successfully!
I joined your micromobility community from lemmy.ml - it should now appear in searches from this instance.
Let’s defeat the 90/9/1-rule!
What is this rule? I’ve never heard of it.
On any given social media site, 90% of people only lurk, 9% of people comment on content, and 1% of people post the actual content.
Wow. I can see how easy it is to assume “the norm” is what is that based on the twitter or reddit feeds when in reality that’s just 1% of people who bothered to speak up. I wonder if there’s a way to measure the same statistics on lemmy?
Yeah sounds about right
it’s a rule that says on average, 90% of users lurk, 9% edit/moderate/comment content, and 1% make the content. hopefully we can be better here than on Reddit which seems to be more like a 90/9.9/.1 kinda thing
It’s hard being a lurker for so long, I only started interacting with a few smaller subreddits around sporting events and then within a year, all this crap started happening. Feel sorry for all the 3rd party developers, I used Boost and I’m glad I supported the developer over the years but can’t believe how they ended up being treated. Death to Reddit
I’m not lurking. You are!
Scraped my reddit account and here to post Manatee!
Agreed! I am curious with this, how did you guys find out about Lemmy? In my case, I was scrolling through Reddit and saw somebody talking about Lemmy. I researched a little bit and here I am! I would love to hear from y’all tho
I was searching for Reddit alternatives and found a rather long list that included which were open source, federated, had apps, etc. and that’s where I first heard about Lemmy. As I was browsing the different sites I found additional people talking about Lemmy specifically and that got me to research further and eventually join.
I love the open source concept of Lemmy. Hope it can just keep getting better
Same, heard about the impending implosion, saw mentions of lemmy and tildes, saw tildes was invite only, now I’m here.
The end of a Reddit era, but the beginning of a new Lemmy one
It was recommended to me over Reddit as well. As I said in another comment, I’ve dabbled with Mastodon as well but I think I may like Lemmy more
this has been one reason for the “nuke your content, keep your account” idea. whenever you feel the urge hop back onto reddit and gently and politely drop the fact that Lemmy exists.
but honestly, do whatever works for you and keeps you engaged in user centric federated social.
Haven’t tried Mastodon, I’ll give it a try although I already love Lemmy haha
That’s precisely how I ended up here as well.
Also, thanks for commenting in a way that encourages further discussion! I think that matches the spirit of OP well.
I am hoping to see more communities spring up here over the next while, but so worry a bit about fragmentation of communities.
What sorts of communities are you participating in or looking for here?
Well, I do like to join communities that align with my hobbies. I just joined the biking, tech and my sports team communtiy. What I’ve liked the most is to see how other communities that I would’ve never thought I would join have interesting content here in Lemmy! Hope to see more of that. How about you?
I feel that’s a lot of us. I do have hobbies and interests such as mechanical keyboards, various games, technology, etc. that Is like to find communities for, but I also used Reddit heavily for work-related research (I’m an IT systems administrator) and there were some fantastic technical communities on Reddit. Hoping to see those spring up here as well.
Also, this is my first comment reply, and unless I’m missing something, it’s wildly inconvenient in the Jerboa app to respond to comments since you can’t just tap the reply in your inbox to go to the response to your comment. Hopefully that gets fixed/added!
Yeah, I am logging into my computer just to reply to your comment. That would be amazing, because there are a lot of niche topics and discussions that I am always interested in. I am learning about Linux servers, docker and python and Reddit has been a great resource. Hope to see those here too :D
So I found in another post…
If you press and hold on the vote count of the comment in your inbox, it opens a pop-up where you can click the link icon to go to the context among other actions.
Top tip!
It’s a bit difficult getting into Lemmy and the feediverse I gotta say. But after looking around for a while I really like how things work here, compared to reddit
I started using Mastodon a couple if years ago; didn’t stay for long but it definitely felt more…friendly than Reddit, or personal I suppose. Glad I found Lemmy though I love the message board/forum format way better than a Twitter like format that Mastodon seems to have, though I do like both
Yea the twitter way of doing it feels more like yelling in a room filled with people, trying to be the loudest. The message board/forum feels more like discussions. But to each his own I guess
Was lurking on Reddit for 10 years, made just 9 comments that whole time; when there’s so much noise you don’t feel you have much to add to the conversation. But us lurkers have a chance to be heard in a growing community and help shape it in some way, gotta get out of my comfort zone I guess.
I often found that on the bigger subs on Reddit. The smaller subs is where I liked to make myself heard. Lemmy, right now, looks to be a similar size to some of those subs, so hopefully it should be a great place!
PS - this is my first post here!
