For months, we urged Senate Democratic leadership to use every tool at their disposal to fight back and raise the alarm. We asked them to stay unified against Trumpā€™s nominees ā€“ a cabinet of billionaires and extremists who openly flout the law. We asked them to organize against Maga bills such as the Laken Riley Act, which expands Trumpā€™s mass deportation powers. We asked them to use every procedural tool to halt business as usual. All too often the response has been: ā€œWeā€™re in the minority, we donā€™t have the votes.ā€

This argument collapsed with the passage of a funding bill packed with Maga priorities. The funding bill required 60 votes to pass, giving Democrats rare leverage. They could have demanded safeguards against Muskā€™s raid of the government or at least stopped Republicans from making things worse. This was perhaps their only real chance to take a stand this year.

Schumerā€™s defense was that avoiding a shutdown would prevent further damage and stop Trumpā€™s rise. But those with the most at stake disagreed. Litigators fighting Trumpā€™s legal battles said passing the continuing resolution hurt their cases more than a shutdown. The federal employeesā€™ union acknowledged that while a shutdown would be painful, a blank check for Trump to continue his rampage was worse. Yes, a shutdown would be an opportunity for Trump to wreak havoc on federal agencies ā€“ but he is doing precisely that already while all the lights are on. From the Center for American Progress to House Democrats to Never Trumpers, a broad coalition agreed: Democrats needed to take a stand.

He wonā€™t though. Heā€™s totally convinced heā€™s right and the rest of the Democrats are wrong.

The depths of my WTF!? when hearing he capitulatedā€¦ are without a bottom.

The republicans have been working on this plan OPENLY for many, many years. Trump in particular SAYS heā€™s going to do x, y, and z. Nearly every opportunity to stop him and the republicans has been squandered or surrendered without a fight and zero consequences applied.

Heads should have quite literally rolled long before. There needs to be consequences for treason and not political.

American politicians are mostly bought and paid for by Russia and Israel and who knows who else.

Our political system and rule of law are so broken I believe it is just irredeemable at this point.

I donā€™t blame the democrats directly but they do share some responsibility for not doing things WHEN THEY COULD. Some individually more than others. Schumer definitely is on the, ā€œmore than othersā€ side.

I donā€™t believe this ends in any other than 2 ways

        1. a boot stamping on a human face forever

        2. 20+ million of us on the national mall demanding a new constitution under threat of 1789ing this bitch.

My fellow Americans are by and large selfish cowards so 1 is imo more likely, you wonā€™t find 20+ million people whoā€™ll actually go to Washington for protest until that protest will happily be met with tanks and bullets.

I think 2 is possible, but the right messaging is needed to get people to say fuck it. There are a lot of Americans I believe are silently waiting for a movement to get behind, but the fear of rent/mortgage etc. next month is stopping individuals from acting. We need to realize that we managed to survive as a country when we didnā€™t go to work for a bit because of covid. We need some leaps of faith or leaps of ā€œfuck it, Iā€™m going down on my on accord if I failā€.

The American Dream I was sold was that we stand up for the miss-treated. If you punched us in the face youā€™d better make it count because weā€™ll come together and fuck your day up and make you understand why you were wrong. The dream I was sold was we are willing do die for whatā€™s right, and whatā€™s right will prevail.

I may have been sold a lie, but itā€™s only us keeping it from being a reality. Letā€™s fall on our own fucking accord and quit being pussies.

*said safely from behind a keyboard -_-

Yes we can literally straight up change the rules in this situation so we arenā€™t extorted by banks and shareholders to live in a house. Theyā€™re literally the parasites

If he wonā€™t step down ā€¦ the Democratic Party should just step out and form their own party minus this dinosaur.

How much would it have hurt Israel if the US govt. had shut down?
