Honestly mate, I am not a tankie or even politically left in my country, but when looking at the insane results for these enormous companies and the ever increasing greed with ads/price hikes, I’ve just had enough.

I know it’s not morally right to steal, but I refuse to support companies like Alphabet paying their CEO 200+ million a year. If they manage to block me out when skirting their ads, then I’ll find something else to spend my time on.

If you’re going to run the NAS as the media server, you need to go with Intel to get quicksync. This because any file not compatible with your clients will require transcoding and you want that done with hardware, not software. It’s a lot faster. I’m using Synology as the referance point. No idea what the Qnap lineup looks like.

If the NAS is only the file host, then I’d say get at least 4 bays so you have some room to grow and that the CPU is less relevant. Depending on your use case, RAM could be more relevant if you’re running loads of containers. I’d at least get one with an extra slot and/or non-soldered RAM, just in case. You most likely won’t ever need more than stock, but the option is nice. I’m running stock still.

I have the 923+ and have been very happy with it, but Jellyfin is migrated to a N100 NUC. The NAS runs the .arr-suite, qBittorrent, autobrr, Flaresolver, all in Portainer, and I’m installing two 4k cameras soon for Surveilance Station. It’s barely breaking a sweat.

Sounds like you are on a good path then, mate.

I agree with the route you are taking. It’s a great blend between price and performance. My only “last advice” would be to overspec the NAS a little, as it would suck having to replace it next year as your needs change.

Don’t get me wrong, but it seems you’re just starting out and to avoid biting over to much, it might be smart to look at at least some turn key solutions. Building a custom NAS with loads of drives is fun, but can get complicated.

I’d say get a pre-built NAS if you can afford to and run everything there. It’s easier and has loads of support available.

If you feel like you want more power, then consider adding a NUC or even full server later on and migrate over.
Forget about network speed. Wired is always fast enough. You’d strugle finding new hardware without Gbit these days anyways.

At least that’s how I started and with a N100 NUC running Proxmox now, I don’t see myself needing to upgrade for a long time. Learning Linux along the way is fun.

Sounds like you are setting up exactly what I have running!

GMKtec G3 (N100 Intel CPU) running in Proxmox with NFS access to my NAS.
It works like a dream, transcoding everything I throw at it with ease.

Just a quick piece of advice: Repaste that sucker the moment you get it. I threw some Noctua paste I had laying around and it worked wonders. The only time the fan kicked on was when I added the libraries and Jellyfin had to sort out 6 TB of media from the NAS. Took maybe 10 minutes before it was done and ready to go.

Let me know if you need some help setting it up. Proxmox and Tailscale (if you want that) had me stuck for a few hours trying to understand TUN.

I’m a little late to the party, but a fairly easy way to combat that fear is to install Tailscale (free) on your server and have them do the same on the AppleTV. It’s supported from version 17 I believe. It uses Wireguard to encrypt so your ISP won’t see squat.

I’m hosting a server for friends and family too and I refuse to open ports for it. It works super well and is fairly easy to setup.

Happy you solved it though! I’m hoping for a new Shield when the new Switch arrives so I can ditch it myself. It works, but you can really tell it’s strugling on the higher bitrate files.

Since it works fine on all other devices, I guess you could exclude the server.

Did you try deleting the server client side and re-adding it? That has solved some issues for me on the Chromecast.

Just want to tag on for OP: I also make sure I never have to transcode video, but don’t really care about audio transcoding. My 923+ deals with it easily anyways. I’d expect the NAS’es listed to manage the same.

Just stick to H264 or H265 (if your player supports it) and I’d wager you’d be fine. Also, stay away from DV if your TV doesn’t support it. I watched too many purple/green intros before realizing I’m a dummy and that Samsung is poop.

My setup, for reference: Synology 923+, Samsung 4K TV, CCWGTV 4K, wireless connection.

I have set the bitrate to 120 instead of unlimited as someone somewhere recommended it. Only real tip I could give you for LAN streaming.

Yeah it costs, depending on quality of course.
My 14 TB disks are filling up faster than I expected and I am not close to Netflix’s catalogue.

Are you playing directly on your server?

For the first one at least you could solve it by running JF with a Chromecast or similar device.
Feels cleaner than a wireless mouse in the living room too, IMO

Yeah I agree, would be nice if the sold packs were as easy to replace as the leased ones are, but I doubt it.

I hope other makers come with a similar solution in the future. Being such a vital part and known to slowly degrade it should be easier to replace.

We agree on every point except Apple products slowing down significantly faster than Android. My personal experience has been the polar oposite.

Hey man, I’m an Android dude for phones. Won’t even consider an iPhone as I dislike locked ecosystems for phones, but this is just not true.

Apple supports their devices way longer than any of the major Android producers do. I can’t remember the last time my phone was supported more than 3-4 years, but my iPad was just rock solid and updated for 6 years. Replaced it because I wanted more RAM for scrolling endlessly on Reddit, but it was brilliant for everything else. My daughter still uses it with no issues today, two tears later.

The missus’ Samsung tablet on the other hand…

Look up Nio. They already have fully automatic battery swapping stations for cars leasing the pack. You literally swap the whole pack instead of charging when it’s empty.
