Build a huge resort, say it’s full even when it is not, and it just so happens to be that half the guests paid in cash. Well, the cash guest, Putin and his oligarchy bros, said “Keep this up or we will ruin you”. So the choice is to make money or lose it all/get killed. Pretty easy choice right?

There should be a federated system for blocking IP ranges that other server operators within a chain of trust have already identified as belonging to crawlers. A bit like fediseer.com, but possibly more decentralized.

Also, whenever one is only partially confident in a classification of an IP range as a crawler, instead of blocking it outright one can serve proof-of-works tasks (à la Anubis) with a complexity proportional to that confidence. This could also be useful in order to keep crawlers somewhat in the dark about whether they’ve been put on a blacklist.

My condo building just got rid of the company that meters our water. After years of this we could finally break the contract.

My water bill usage was something like $15/mo and they had an admin fee of $13/mo. In a building of like 150 apartments, those guys were raking in like $2k a month from us for keeping their automated shit plugged in.

The managers said they would just stop metering and our monthly fees would pay the bill. After a year, they would adjust our monthly rates to balance it out.

They never had to balance it out - that’s how little the overall water usage cost was.
