As misguided as their respective motivations are (Anton is a psychopath with very black-and-white morals) they are the only two characters who are not driven by material gain. That’s what makes them both so formidable, in the context of the film.

I’ve rewatched this movie so many times, and this to me is the overarching theme of the story.
