  • world leaders were telling me in quiet asides that the meeting with Trump had gone brilliantly, that he had been very happy, that he had listened — actually listened — to every leader in the big closed-door confab and had left in a good mood.

Hang on, was this the same Donald Trump who had been berating partners only hours earlier?

    Yes, apparently so.

I would say Trump was playing them, or playing the markets for his own financial ends. But he’s not that smart.

Such sudden and extreme changes in attitude and demeanor are a symptom of dementia. Or of bipolar or some other mental disorders.

  • Get with the times, grandpa!

    (jk, jk)

ETA: It’s kind of an interesting throwback. Bill Bryson has pointed out that in the colonial period culture in North America (Eastern seaboard really) was still heavily dependent on trends from Britain (and to a lesser extent elsewhere in Europe). But because it took a while for be slang and terms to make it over the Atlantic and propagate across the colonies, they were usually a few decades behind (I think he actually said about 50 years behind). This meant that colonialists in America were using terms in daily life that were considered pretty antiquated by Brits. And could lead to bewilderment and mocking if the team into Brits.

The use of ‘soccer’ / ‘football’ in North America compared to the UK could be seen as an echo of that old dynamic.

  • I’m with you. I try to avoid Amazon as much as possible. But it’s usually not very cheap or affordable. And like you say, there’s a breaking point.

Most of the time when I go directly to the company’s website either their e-commerce section is at had it’s basically not functional, or they charge a fortune for shipping. And any discount codes funny make that big of a difference.

Now, when I find I’ve that doesn’t fall into those categories I will bookmark them and they will become my default site for that product. But unfortunately that’s usually not the case.

And I’ve had a few bad experiences on eBay (about 5-10% of my purchases there), which makes me wary of them.
