  • I remember having to drag a chase out for a long time. 60 or 90 minutes. I think it was a challenge race form outside the campaign. It mixes into the finale race/chase where I think the escape strategy has to develop before letting you jump the bridge, all on heat 6 for the first and only time.

Yes, for all of those, so much effort could be lost to one professional placement of a spike strip. Good times. Bad times. But at least you could reset the game to win the loot boxes back then.

  • I can’t imagine anyone can invite 100 active friends. Maybe I’m just too much of a loser to fathom that many, but I mean I do have a pretty broad definition of friend. Still only invited like 25 of my friends from all different times of my life. Add 25 for a spouse and 50 family, done: 100.

However, I could easily see inviting 100 family members in theory for myself, but it didn’t pan out in practice. The generation before me, the weddings of my childhood, had a huge family turnout. They were grand/children of immigrants and still loved close by and gathered often. By time it was my turn though, they spread geographically and had all new close family members from their spouse’s side. I invited 15.

So where do you go from there? Friends of friends. Coworkers. Inviting all your bosses/executives was a thing here. Acquaintances from minor prior interactions. Probably a bigger contributor is inviting all your parents’ friends and coworkers because your parents want to show off. Sounds insane now, but it was just a thing they did. So “tertiary” might not even be disconnected enough. Plus the invite list can be much larger than the attendee list, with some courtesy invitations and possibly some strategic invitations to hope for gifts.

Some people just want to game it to be as big as they can make it. Some people have a list that big out of respect for family.

And if you do end up having a larger wedding and feel like some family member is a bit out of your life, if you don’t dislike them, I recommend inviting them. The next time you see them will be at a funeral. Don’t save it for that. But nothing wrong with keeping it small, either.

  • I do not understand how the [American] people in my life that say this are the same people who thought Biden et al were the ones who were going to imprison people for beliefs. I’m lying. Of course I get it. The surveillance state is currently (appearing to) work for them because it’s The Others^TM that are getting hurt.

It doesn’t really fix anything or change anyone’s mind, but I have to find some amusement, right? That group overlaps with Cloud-based doorbell camera usage. “what’s the name of your wifi? I mean there’s only 4 in range and _____ is the strongest, so probably that, right?.. No I don’t need the password. I wanna see something. Can you to bring this doorbell to the shower with you?”

I don’t think I’m evil for arguing against the surveillance state.

I also can’t do shit with their camera.

  • Most drivers I talk to, even the most clueless of drivers, seem to be aware of red light and speed cameras. Some people are aware they go up, but once someone gets a ticket mailed a month later by surprise, the news spreads like wildfire. Plus, many devices can locate them. My non-internet dashcam came loaded with their locations, surprisingly. And yes, I’m reasonably sure it has an internal database, because I bought it a couple years after my region banned cameras and removed the equipment.

  • It’s not just urinals. The first day of the year with shorts at home always brings a surprise chilly mist on my shins from a regular toilet. It is what it is. You’re doing it as good as it gets. Either you’re experiencing the normal amount of spray or your stream makes extra spray. Either way, it is what it is, it sounds. All you can do is lean forward and spread your feet asuch as you can to avoid collecting the mist. Side wall is my go-to. Lipped walls are my enemy.

  • Side note about the brakes reference: that thread was frustrating because the headline readers were assuming the mechanical brakes were being deleted and relying solely on regenerative braking. They weren’t. It was replacing the hydraulic portion of the mechanical brakes with electronic sensors and actuators. While I naturally have concerns about electronic failure, it’s not like hydraulic brakes are immune to problems. I’ve had lines rust out and leak, pistons leak, pistons seize, lines clog, and slides seize. Very anecdotally, no failures of electric parking brakes.

Anyway, very neat etymology for both a term and tool I use. I never really considered “try” to be separate meanings between “attempt” and “test” because I took an “attempt” to be a “test” of ability.

  • Why not Reddit? I’ve found more reddit users irl after I left than anytime before. Seems plenty normal. Otherwise, facebook/tiktok/Instagram/YouTube scrolling. I assume Tumblr and Twitter, too. A myriad of endless mobile games based around bubbles, blocks, or tower defense. I’ve also seen cross stitch and paint by numbers type apps. I’m sure there’s people that doomscroll regular news sites.

I’m guessing you’re looking to use your time better and want recommendations though, not just a list describing how every cohort is doomscrolling their little diminishing dopamine box.
