science@lemmy.world•The Selfish Gene, 50 years on — it’s time for an update
19·11 days agoThe selfish gene is about applying a darwinian solution to humans. It’s where the memetic experience comes in. The Nature reporter themselves talks about the “Replicator”.
I’ve read it twice, the last time being 2021, but maybe I’ll have to read it again to resist this shit mainstream Science is trying to feed the world.

118·11 days agoSocial darwinism is wrong. The human will show itself in all its beautiful complexity despite dumb simplified theories.

2·28 days agoI think those tech moguls are really betting on the political power of AI. That it can overturn elections, hack powerful systems, change regimes, advance science incredibly.
All of which are social achievements. Except the moguls themselves and their projects are not social at all.
So they bet: “Our projects are so politically relevant the money won’t matter.”. And it ends up mattering, maybe. I don’t know, I’m no political scientist.

More billion (or trillion) parameters give exponentially less return, and they keep adding parameters (which also increases the cost exponentially) anyway. This is just one of the infinite signs that those companies don’t give a single f*** about society or the well being of the population.
Test yourself on Ollama now, since the servers are way more stable as of now. Deepseek-4.1 is just as good as GPT-6.
Edit: you have to create an interface with tools for using Ollama Cloud, and this isn’t exactly directly available as of now, so keep that in mind before signing in.
Edit2: Deepseek-V4 comparing itself to other models

2·29 days agoI’m quite glad OpenAI is showing its Elon Musk (or Grok) face. It makes me understand why Elon Musk was an original founder. Thank you for showing your true colors always.
I have been using Deepseek-4.1-Flash (<400B). There is absolutely no need to go beyond that. Besides, it’s good to feel you’re dealing with something predictable (as is open-weights <400B)

World News@lemmy.world•Kenya's Ruto calls for permanent African representation on UN Security Council | Africanews
2·1 month agoAfrica has to decide for itself what’s is in its best interest in the UN. Some may say that the lack of democracy is a problem, but it is just as an human endeavour as any in the world.
Africa has to represent itself, to have a living voice in world matters. They sure know as best than anyone what is good for their destiny, for they are people just as any.
UN has a post world war 2 History, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t built to bring peace and prosperity to the world, and this means giving voice and political power to decide on world matters to Africa.

2·2 months agoNo, account works fine and it can be “Free”. I’ve used a free account. I wouldn’t recommend using a paid account for this, since you can have problems with ToS.
You get the ARL by checking “Storage” --> “Cookies” --> “Search: arl” (F12 for Developer Mode, or equivalent on Android). The string that comes up should be pasted in settings and saved. Then you can access any album and download it.
Edit: you can only play 30 seconds of any track on Free, but when you download the albums they’ll come complete

Is it a problem to want more options? To want a distributed network of available books for knowledge? Does everything needs to be concentrated in Anna’s Archive? Does it seem without failures to you?
Search for the same book in z-lib. Copyright claims have removed the book!
Don’t you agree people should resist more about this instead of letting everything for the hands of Anna’s Archive? Does this make sense to you?

8·2 months agoI think they’re going for a GitHub/Microsoft approach. Let people enjoy themselves in a nice environment and cut them off if something does not fit/satisfy. Then call it “rogue behavior” to keep the public in check.

I don’t have to get past the preface to read things like:
" I should also give some space to Amotz Zahavi’s idea that altruistic donation might be a ‘Potlatch’ style of dominance signal: see how superior to you I am, I can afford to make a donation to you!"
But don’t worry, I’ll read the entire book and highlight what I think is most despicable. Is it just a Lemmy post? Yes, but this matter is important to me.
I’ll think of it as if I were writing a scientific article of low reach.
Edit: Further down the PREFACE:
"Similar feeble thoughts have been strung together to produce the impression that Darwinian social theory is reactionary in its political implications. "
. He calls his theory a Darwinian social theory! This is a joke!
Moving on.
