    Yes! There are quieter blenders out there. Regular blenders use universal motors which are cheap and powerful but also very loud. Think of vacuum cleaners, where the cheap ones are loud and the expensive ones are quite a bit quieter, e.g., Dyson, Miele. Brushless DC motors are powerful and simple but require complicated and expensive electronics to control them.

    Blendtec and Vitamix are the best known blenders that use brushless DC motors. Nowadays there are lots of others. Vitamix makes a higher end version of their blender that provides a sound deadening enclosure for the whole thing, complete with thick rubber gaskets. It’s pretty effective and costs about 2000.
