Yeah that’s Bonjour and having a fixed platform.

Quick IoT haters, spin this back around. This time make it that the toothbrushes all form into a man sized brush bot that people the brush off.
There are free solutions that are open source, hell there’s older commercial solutions from Acronis and whatever Symantec calls Ghost these days. You made a poor choice in selecting a losing horse in a race that’s been run many times - how is that a reflection of the state of modern tech? You didn’t choose the Hare, you chose poorly.
The article and this discussion isn’t about reliable solutions vs new fangled stuff that doesn’t realise, it’s about what we do now that stuff realised and we didn’t think about what we signed up for. I’m really glad your dad encouraged you to think about the value of well-worn approaches but you’re being extremely reductive as are many in this discussion. What I find interesting about that is I feel this trend towards reductive thinking probably reflects a world seemingly happily with sliding the Overton window right inch by inch.
Yeah that’s not correct. Facebook bought into the oculus project in a share swap/cash deal with Lucky Palmer. Carmack joined the project later because he believes in VR in a big way and he contributed very important parts of the rendering methods to greatly improve performance.
Exactly this. What a terrible exercise in reductionism.
Man that is one vapid piece of writing. VR is definitely a thing - there’s a whole market of devices, accessories and apps and experiences made for it. If your articles hinges on the idea of dismissing something that exists because you think it’s pointless then your article is reductive. Reductive posts on forums are thing but paragraphs of reductive reasoning is proof that some people need to touch grass now and then. I have no interest in Vision Pro but complaining that VR is pointless isn’t what I need to do to justify my lack of interest.
First, you said iPads are the entire market and I just proved that isn’t remotely true, so accept that. Switching up the goalposts to insult people in markets that either don’t have access to iPads or can’t afford them isn’t ok.
Scale of economy isn’t the reason that globally Apple cannot go beyond 40% of that market, it’s a competitive market and Apple would need to sacrifice profit to sell at prices their competitors can to match them at scale. Apple will not be able to meet even their nearest neighbours down from Samsung because they will not scale their soaring profit margin down to match.
If you care the to be honest about subsidies then you may want to ask why Google dominates all Apple products and why Facebook used to - remember when Facebook had its own preferences before being migrated to the app settings? Apple has often subsidised product with brand relationships to certain third-parties to maximise profits.
As to your vague statement about every iPad shitting every competitor that is is bullshit and dismisses all value propositions in favour or brand comfort and some subjective synthetic benchmarks that rarely reflect real world experexperience. In practice I own a really great Lenovo tab that gives better than or equal to current gen iPad Pro experiences for much less. And I get to side load apps and remove bloat and ads at my behest. What do you get on an iPad? Whatever Apple supplies in the AppStore and that’s it. Wipr is ok if you are ok with Safari but you can’t easily or consistently remove ads from other Apps and you can’t recompile them on device to add features or remove other annoying ones. Synthetic benchmarks don’t tell the real story and never have.
Nope, iPads are less than 40% of the global tablet space
By garbage you mean Lenovo can offer a fast tablet with hdr, high frame rate display, 2k res, proper pen included and useful desktop mode for less than an iPad? Sorry but iPad is no longer offering competitive product in the tablet space.
Ocing the display to 96hz for 24fps video seems silly, you can interpolate frames to suit any refresh rate with no loss in quality these days.
Can I ask why you think hand tracking in Quest is underwhelming? For the Quest 3, it’s fucking incredible, it recognises individual digits and gestures in all lighting and scenarios I’ve tested. Which generation did you use?
Have you? Do you understand what MIDI2 offers? What you’re describing is unrelated to controlling synths and samplers. What you’re describing seems more like a mod file system where the samples are generated on the fly and that has all same limits that and generative art does.
Are they? Video compresses really well these days. How does replacing real footage with generated content that cannot be accurate better than accurate video?
It is a non-profit.
The Mozilla Corporation was established on August 3, 2005, to handle the revenue-related operations of the Mozilla Foundation. As a non-profit, the Mozilla Foundation is limited in terms of the types and amounts of revenue it can have. The Mozilla Corporation, as a taxable organization (essentially, a commercial operation), does not have to comply with such strict rules. Upon its creation, the Mozilla Corporation took over several areas from the Mozilla Foundation, including coordination and integration of the development of Firefox and Thunderbird (by the global free software community) and the management of relationships with businesses.
Why don’t you go right the fuck away then.
