From a cursory search, he only uses triggers on the kick drum. This is the norm in metal, and it’s by no means easier to play with triggers, as you still need to play in time. All it does is make every hit sound the same (if the drummer so chooses, a trigger can also trigger hits at different volumes, although it’s unusual). The rest of the drums are highly compressed and limited, which help achieve that crisp and clean sound you are describing.
