Taiwan has actually an actually good functioning democracy (unlike the US) and good civil liberties. They speak another language, have their own cultural heritage. If China invaded, they would loose their freedom of speech, China would impose on them Mandarin, like they do in Hong Kong, remove free media, introduce pro-CCP propaganda into children’s books, and introduce mass surveillance, just like they did in Hong Kong. Taiwanese enjoy their freedoms, they are quite rich by the global standards (and compared to China), so they wouldn’t benefit much from joining China or being forced into joining China
