      Yes, decades of systemic subjugation and poverty. When survival is at stakes, people tend to do the extreme stuff, too

      And for the system, it’s probably cheaper to just let it happen instead of trying to lift these poor people up

          The (upper-caste) people in charge are often itching to acquaint people from the lower strata with the business end of a noose at the drop of a hat, so that tends to hamper efforts towards a workers’ union – but even so, there are some pretty significant efforts here and there

          If it’s anything like I see in America, people who aren’t willing to be taken advantage of are seen as weak and not knowing their place.
