pretty sure that use of the term originated with that exact movie scene.
There’s also a point where the gimp tries to speak and it’s pretty clear he has at least a speech impediment if not a mental disability.

I just figured because he was abducted chained and abused in a basement I didn’t realize, that makes it even more sad
