May 2023 1.47%
May 2024 2.32%
May 2025 2.69%
= 83% growth in 2 years. That’s very impressive, I suppose Steam Deck is a major reason for this, not only because Steam OS is native on it, but also because many games are now tested to work on it either natively or through Proton before launch.
This has the side effect that using the Steam client on independent Linux systems also generally work better.I admit I’m boycotting everything American because of the current administration, the only exception I have is my Steam client.
Because with Linux there is simply no real alternative. Except maybe if you can get it on GOG and get it to work manually. With a Steam active monthly user count over 100mil that means millions of gamers using Linux at any given time
Wow, when I started using Linux in 2005, there were an estimated 10 million desktop users.
Its an increase in the share of steam users. The steamuser base has also been growing in that time, so the absolute number may have increased more.

One Steam using family member here went from Windows to Linux during May. They did their part.
I’m doing my part!
3 PCs converted and using a steam deck. Admittedly the going is pretty rough on the 13 year old PC but hey it runs some lightweight stuff. I think we have an old laptop around here thats coming up next for conversion. Probably not worth installing steam on that one though.
Main pc is running bazzite, i got a steam deck, and real soon i’m going to try out another (undecided) OS on my win10 mini pc hooked up to the tv. Coop Vampire Survivors is great for parties.
I bought a gaming laptop and installed Linux on it

I’m getting my new Window 11 - soon to be Linux - laptop next week. Can’t wait to get steam going on it!
I recently did the same. Had an opportunity to buy a laptop at a good price, and I immediately swapped the m.2 drive with a blank for Linux Mint. There’s definitely been a learning curve and a lot of web searching for tweaks and fixes, but the overall user experience has been great. I’ll very likely be swapping to Linux on my desktop soon.
i switched to Mint LMDE in April. i first heard of linux in 2012 and switched to it sometimes, but always switched back to windows. not anymore. thx Trump <3
