In a fresh instance of deteriorating relations between Moscow and Baku, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev said Russia had “invaded and occupied” Azerbaijan in 1920 as it established what would later become the Soviet Union.

Some of these were not actually invaded at that time. Countries like Finland, Estonia and Poland were actually independent between their founding in the late 1910s and WWII. Eastern Europe being satellite states for Moscow is a WWII affair. Not that it makes any of this less reprehensible, but what happened to Poland and Finland and what happened to Azerbaijan (and Transcaucasia in general) are different things.
