Part of the insistence of ACAB is to push these non bastard cops to do something about their bad reputation, in my opinion. Like, I don’t truly believe most women saying “all men” mean “ALL” it’s meant to fire the men up who don’t want it to be all men.
To a certain extent, “every cog is crooked in a corrupt machine” and some are definitely sticking to that. But in either case, the desired outcome is that the good hearted people will make a change. Either cop as a profession will disappear, and those people give their time to the public in other ways, or the cancer will be excised from within.
As a man, I can confidently tell you, that causes the opposite effect. Just makes you isolate from the group that hates you, obviously. And for me, that’s everyone/everything anyway.
I also know a lot of men who aren’t affected by it in this way. If you can’t get over the “all men” rhetoric, you’re high-key too sensitive. And I’m really fucking sensitive.
Yes I fucking am, and I should be. I don’t want or need to be lumped in with this shit, I am fine without more human bullshit. It’s bad enough to go work somewhere that you are judged just for trying to eat healthy, I don’t have to tolerate any injustice.
I think they’re saying this is what a paramilitary is. Civilians acting as an illegitimate military; brutality is the default. ICE isn’t murdering and raping yet, therefore, they are actually a restrained species of paramilitary. They’re a mob sicced on specific targets and so far they’ve been nice about it. They exist so that we may end up in mass graves, which seemingly isn’t happening yet.
By extension, they’re saying not to give police too much credit. I assume they’re implying that police desperately need reform, and they’re descended from pinkertons… from state sanctioned gangbangers. Therefore a good bad guy is just a good bad guy, and not a good guy.
Yes. The job of paramilitaries is extermination and intimidation.
That is their job. They are doing it. That’s professionalism.
They aren’t going the “quick and dirty” path of extermination by killing them all. Just the troublesome or sickly ones.
That’s restraint.
You are pointing at a paramilitary doing paramilitary shit. The problem isn’t the level of “professionalism” or “restraint”, the problem is that it’s a fucking paramilitary.
If you want to name those “police departments operating with professionalism and restraint” I can play this exact same game because it’s still cops doing cop shit.
If you disagree, how do you propose one enacts an extermination and intimidation campaign “professionally and with restraint”?
Yeah, I live in a red state. But it’s an university town, and the police is pretty chill. (I’m brown, and have a distinctly foreign accent, so I’d know.)
Fortunately, we haven’t seen much ICE action yet. As I said, it’s an university town, most foreigners are on non-immigrant Visas, so I guess we aren’t a prime target yet. But I’m sure our time will come, sooner or later, just trying my best to graduate ASAP and leave this country.
seems like they target heavy blue areas, with large population of POCs, we know they rarely target red areas, because the gop and republicans will raise hell over it. also all the “illegal” immigrants are working in plants in rural areas, cant have them running afoul of these rich plant owners, or corporations. farming areas are also less targeted, and most of them have fled the states.
You’re in a Red state, so that insulates you somewhat. He doesn’t want to have disputes with Red state governors. Memphis is the lone exception, with the governor being cool with letting the National Guard abuse his citizens…
So you’re probably safe from now, but if your campus starts getting activist, and starts protesting, ICE will show up.
I’ve never had that experience. Every police department I’ve had personal experience with has been corrupt. I have noticed that some police chiefs I’ve seen on TV seem more professional; but those people are appointed by (liberal) politicians and vetted. I assume most of the rank and file police are envious of ICE. I think if the federal government could somehow assume direct control of police, bypassing mayors, chiefs, etc, they wouldn’t really have much push-back from the rank and file.
Any of these imaginary police departments that work with ‘’’restraint”’ and ‘“professionalism”” could have broken ranks and spoken up about Eric Garner or George Floyd or the MOVE bombings
A simple police operation done by the books is not newsworthy. That can give a skewed impression.
In my opinion, the overall image holds that the US police doesn’t do as good a job as police in countries with 2.5 - 3.5 years of training, different screening / application criteria and better pay.
Part of “fixing” the problems specific to the US would be to provide such training as well as a payment that makes it an attractive job for people who would also succeed in a different career. Only way to do that would be to raise taxes significantly for the 1 percent or 0.1 percent.
It would also be necessary to hold them accountable. A “few bad apples” are one thing, but when the system covers for them, it’s a systematic problem, regardless of the number. There need to be real consequences for criminal behaviour on the job, all while having a measured response (retraining, warning, …) for faulty actions that can happen to anyone in the heat of the moment.

You should get therapy instead of trauma posting on lemmy. You have growing you need to do.
“We have an image problem. The issue is clearly people who notice the bad behaviour, not those who do it”
ICE is also operating with “restraint” and “professionalism” as far as paramilitaries go.
Don’t let the terrible normalize the bad.
So lack of due process is professionalism?

Cops are usually the baddest gang in the hood and the biggest criminal organization in most cities.
Couple o’ points:
I wouldn’t characterize ICE as having “restraint” or “professionalism.”

Okay, I’m tired of your sealioning. Byeeee.
Sealioning? Lol. I do admit I’m guilty of a leading question there but that’s about it.
No wonder we can’t communicate! I’m being mildly pedantic and your definitions are apparently highly personalized.
Beautifully said, thank you!

ACAB

Their silence is complicity
Have any of them stopped ICE from terrorizing their territory?
I’ve heard of a single case where a local cop threatened ICE with arrest if they tried to drive thru a crowd instead of back up and go around.
@JonsJava: This is not trolling and barely even a voice of support.

Oh they train them… It’s just “warrior training” instead of de-escalation.
