Nobody’s opinion on immigration has anything to do with legality. To prove it, just ask them if they would be OK with immigration if we legalized all of it.
You will find that “legal/ illegal” is 100% a stalking horse for another opinion they’re not so comfortable espousing.

You might be surprised. Some people are just legitimately that devoid of imagination and original thought that they cling to extant processes as near-holy-institutions for resolution of all life’s problems. Not a small amount of people either.
But yeah, most people crying about ‘illegal immigration’ are just racists.
I wouldn’t be ok with that. But I also think the path to legal immigration needs fixing. And that for example farm workers should have a legal way into the country for work, while also being provided the same worker protections every citizen gets.
