I am unconvinced that that middle third gives a shit about Israel or Palestine.
10 years ago, I had a girlfriend. Her actual given name was Emily, I’ll let her generic ass name be her anonymity. She went to an all-girl’s college, I was her first boyfriend in her mid-20’s, last I saw of her she was joining asexual facebook groups. The only man she had sex with was the one person on earth she wouldn’t talk to about her sexuality, typical woman shit.
We dated through the 2014 mid-term election. I asked her who she was voting for in the primary. She says to me, “Oh I don’t vote. I’m not that interested in politics.” I told her I’ve voted in every election I’ve been eligible for because of what happened on my 18th birthday. She asks what. I say I went to get my motorcycle endorsement, and while I was at the DMV to get my “limited provisional” bitch baby license upgraded to an adult’s driver license. They weren’t turning them sideways yet. I passed the piss easy quiz, the little computer in the back that asks you “should you crash your motorcycle into a daycare: Yes or No?” We really should make citizenship harder.
So I pass the piss easy test and the woman wearing the quasi-cop uniform that they wear at the NCDMV for some damn reason starts asking me “Height? Weight? Skin color? Hair color? Eye color? You want to be an organ donor? What background do you want? The lighthouse, the state seal, the state, the Flyer?” and then she says something to me I’ll remember until I die: “Okay, we’ll just register you for Selective Service…do you want to register to vote?”
Do you know what Emily had the gall to ask me next?
“What’s Selective Service?” Ahh that all-girls college education hard at work.
Every time I hear a feminist bitching about Kamala or even Hilary losing, I think of Emily, the oldest of two daughters raised by a single mother graduate of an all-girls school who wasn’t even registered to vote. She never cast a ballot until 2020, I voted for Obama twice. I’ve voted for exactly one Republican, once. Steve Troxler. NC Secretary of Agriculture, enforced a gun ban at the 2014 state fair. In every other race since 2008 I’ve voted Democrat, Independent, or in every “only one person is running and they’re a Republican” I’ve left it blank. And yet I get blamed that Trump is in office because I’m a man. I voted for Hilary in an election Emily wasn’t registered for, and you wonder why I don’t give a shit if women lose their civil rights.
perhaps instead of getting teen-angsty about having to sign up for selective service and having the privilege and responsibility of participating in the democratic process you could lift poor emily up - but I guess seeing your example of it may have soured her on the entire thing.
typical woman shit.
I’m not trying to be mean, but the mind that votes for obama and clinton, but then types this out - maybe you’ve got some issues to work out. don’t get me wrong, I’ve known insufferable people male and female that drove me up the wall - but I didn’t take my anger out on an entire gender.
This isn’t an attack, but like, “typical woman shit.” makes me wonder about the honesty of everything else.
I’m going to ask you again because you have failed to answer.
In what way was I supposed to “Lift poor Emily up?” Standing there in her bedroom I painted lilac for her, putting our clothes back on to go take a walk through a botanical garden or something that afternoon, what was I supposed to say in response to “I don’t follow politics, I’m not even registered to vote?”
makes me wonder about the honesty of everything else.
Yeah, a man couldn’t have formed a low opinion of women based on genuine lived experience. It’s more comfortable for me to believe he’s a liar.
In what way was I supposed to “lift Emily up?” At the time, she had a bachelor’s degree, I didn’t yet. She was 9 months younger than me, we were both in our mid-20’s. She attended the same public school system I did, she’d gone to college and gotten a liberal arts education. At the time this conversation took place, we’d been dating for about 3 months. How the hell is it supposed to by my civic duty to have registered her to vote 6 years before we met? If she’s supposed to be my equal, she should have registered to vote on her 18th birthday and voted in all elections like I did. What the fuck do I owe her that she doesn’t owe me?
I said something negative about a woman, and you can’t accept that.
I voted for Obama twice, and Clinton, and Biden, and Kamala, not to mention Roy Cooper and on down the ballot, because I hate fascists. I’m pro-labor. I’m pro-union. I believe in separation of church and state, in fact I’m anti-church. I want a New Deal, I want public works infrastructure projects that’ll put my nation at the spear point of yet another century. I want to eradicate more diseases. I want to put measles, mumps, rubella, whooping cough, anthrax, HIV and COVID-19 in graves right next to goddamn motherfucking smallpox by vaccinating the FUCK out of the world.
But I said something negative about a woman, and you can’t accept that.

This, but genuinely. If you think your “lived experience” (cute) gives you a rational position from which to denigrate half of the people on the entire planet with transparently fragile misogyny, you’re just broken.
I’ve shared one anecdote from my 40 years on this planet for which you judge my entire character.
Emily was one of several women who refused to discuss improving our mutual sex life, only for me to find her gossiping with friends or strangers about it later. Hence my comment of her following asexual Facebook groups “typical woman shit.” Because, well…it is. The question I’ve had women ignore the most is “How can I make it better for you?”
Emily isn’t the only woman who was or still is in my life who doesn’t take an interest in politics, only to include me in the demographic she blames for things not going her way when I’ve spent a lifetime voting the way she’d choose for me.
Emily was one of several women who refused to discuss improving our mutual sex life, only for me to find her gossiping with friends or strangers about it later.
Tbh this sounds like an issue with you rather than with women in general. And what does this have to do with voting???
I voted for candidates who supported women’s rights when my girlfriend hadn’t bothered to register let alone cast a ballot, yet I’m the asshole because my capacity for sympathy isn’t infinite, particularly when you’re mad at me, not her, when I voted for every candidate you’d want to win but she didn’t.
You think this is maybe why young men are turning to the Republicans? Because you make absolutely sure there’s just no winning for them on the left? It’s “introspection or Russian Asset” time.

Do we look like your therapist? How embarrassing this should be for you. How fortunate for you that you cannot feel it. How unfortunate for us.
gee you seem like such a fucking gem.

Enlighten me.

no, you dated a vapid person and indicted an entire fuckin’ gender.

And I’ve been sick of it for awhile now.
Tbh this sounds like an issue with you rather than with women in general. And what does this have to do with voting???
TL;DR
See?
I voted for candidates who supported women’s rights when my girlfriend hadn’t bothered to register let alone cast a ballot, yet I’m the asshole because my capacity for sympathy isn’t infinite, particularly when you’re mad at me, not her, when I voted for every candidate you’d want to win but she didn’t.

Hi, I’m lost. Where is anyone defending not voting?
Also, where did she post on Lemmy so I can yell at her?
Oh, also also, you should be nicer to people, especially women.
