They never get as good if I have ample space all around.

    You hit me squate on the nose with that one!

    Up to recently I could only draw on cheap (5x5 squared) paper, because it’s so comitting to do it on ‘real’ drawing paper.

    Painting with the cheap student grade oil on paper? Yeah. Painting with good extra-fine oil on a real canvas? 😱😨😰

    I’m trying to fool myself by using cheap “Zap blocks” and mixing in better blocks of paper, but for oil I have no clue.

    Life is weird.

      I feel that. I’m not much of an artist but I bought two sketchbooks a while back and I simply didn’t use the big one until I felt my skills were “good enough” for it. I know it’s bullshit but we always make mental barriers for ourselves when the lock on the cage is on the inside.
