European lawmakers face a decision on whether ordinary consumers would be confused by the idea of vegetarian sausages or vegan burgers. Meat producers say it’s not that simple.
Ah yes! The important issues are discussed!
Time to ban “hot dog” for not containing dog meat.
And they’re sold cold!
And Kinderschokolade for not containing even 1% of meat from real children.
Or any meat.
who the fuck confuses vegan burgers/sausages for meat ones while buying? Not a vegan by a long shot, but vegan items clearly label themselves as such.
They look identical and have extremely similar names. It happened more than once that I bought what I thought was meatballs or burger meat to be disappointed when eating them, whick led to looking up the packaging in my garbage and finding out they had the vegan logo on the back.
Nothing is idiot-proof.
They’ll always make a bigger idiot.
They are all very prominently labeled as vegan on the front and are located in an entirely different section of the supermarket.
If those hints couldn’t save you, maybe it’s okay that you tried to try a vegan alternative for once before reigniting this culture war issue over other people having options and sometimes being catered to as well.
I don’t get why they have to look the same as meat products, as a lot of additives are necessary to achieve that.
Why should vegans not be able to make and eat the same recipes/foods as everyone else? There are countless reasons to replace individual ingredients vs inventing a whole new set of foods. People are increasingly into these products for some reason (myself included). Healthiness is another issue, but that’s always going to be a concern for all lifestyles.
Because there’s a market for it, simple as that.
There’s also plenty of vegan products that don’t directly emulate meat-based foods. Also some foods were always flexible in their ingredients, and expecting meat is just personal and cultural bias.
Meat producers can fuck off
Personally I’ve never considered sausage or burger necessarily a meat product. Nor steak.
However, in Norway we use a word closer to beef / beef meat for steak, and vegan beef (meat) wouldn’t sound right in my head.
I do however far more important things to be outraged/worried/annoyed/what have you, about than what people want to call their tofu, should I so desire.
All right, so call them “veggie patties” and “veggie links that the meat companies and special interest groups can go sit on.”
