Max Verstappen will be associated with a new driver number when the 2026 F1 season gets underway.

I don’t follow what Max getting ahead of Oscar has anything to do with Max’s number choice.
AFAIU, Max always wanted to use the number 3, but couldn’t because Riciardo already took it. That’s why he went with 33 instead.
And because FIA now allows for a driver to change their number now (if the number is eligible), its only logical for Max to go with the number he wanted in the first place, because RIC has ceded his 3.As in if he narrowly lost a championship and ended up third, would he want to memorialise that by taking number 3. I can’t imagine Verstappen being the kind of guy to actually care about that though!
I mean, in that case some stupid people might write online or on fan banners “haha he’s 3 because he came 3rd, loser lost” but Max wouldnt care.
