I read Hillbilly Elegy shortly after it came out due to the prompting of a conservative acquaintance. It is such an infuriating book because he comes SO close to getting it. Instead of acknowledging that he only got where he is through the help of others including government welfare, he decides he is a Special Boy and would have been great regardless.
