I really don’t like Reuters contributing to the political theater here. Trump knows goddamn well that tariffs are going to be paid by consumers in the form of higher prices. He’s imposing a tax on said consumers. Then he loudly and visibly yells at companies in the press to try to offload responsibility (“I’m not making you pay any more, it’s those darn companies! I’m on your side here!”).
Under normal circumstances, okay, give someone the benefit of the doubt. But Trump has flagrantly and repeatedly tried to exploit ignorance in a number of areas via making outright false claims. The way to deal with that is to explain what’s going on when it happens. Trump’s not making a good-faith statement or making an error. He is trying to mislead a substantial chunk of the public.
