Merchants from Iran’s bazaars played a key role in the 1979 Islamic Revolution, which brought Iran’s clerics to power.
Now they may have started a movement to depose those rulers because many of the protesters want more than economic relief.
Some told the ABC they were angry about extensive corruption and decades of mismanagement and wanted an entirely new system of government.
“This anger comes from the sense that the country has been abandoned, as if no-one intends to stop the collapse, the instability, or the soaring prices,” Babak* (not their real name) told the ABC.

Are tankies defending theocracies against western imperialism? I don’t know, I blocked hexbear, lemmygrad and ml communities (yeah, I know it’s ironic considering the instance I’m from, but I ended up here because of FOSS)
Come to db0. We have better communities and are built on FOSS support and aren’t run by weirdos.
That sounds amazing.
Yes. We are all normal and cool people. Be one of us.
Ha! I knew the right answer was that Alice’s four brothers had 12 sisters in total!
Welcome :3
Check your instances’ own world news pages and you’ll probably find your answer.
Here’s an example
Tldr: yes they are defending the current government
That’s not defending the Iranian government, it’s shitting on Israel and Mossad for being agents provocateurs.
sigh thanks FOSS website…
are there tankines for iran?
I spotted a post that was very “Uprising is CIA staged”
Like the current CIA would give a fuck about helping the Iranian people
It also occurred to me, you may want to consider moving over to Piefed if you’re not into tankie shenanigans.
How much does instance really matter? I’m new to lemmy but so far it seems like I can view content from any instance just as easily as the one my account is made on.
Also, fuck tankies
It matters only insofar as you cannot see content from any instance, only the ones your instance admins allow to federate with yours. If every instance federated with all the others we’d be flooded with CSAM and all other manner of horrific shit. If I’m not mistaken, Sopuli is pretty light on defederation.
Aside from that, people tend to make assumptions about users based on what instance they are on. I think that’s usually a dumb way of going about things, but it happens regardless.
Edit: oh and I specifically mentioned Piefed because the main Lemmy software devs are ML. Piefed is a (mostly) compatible alternative not made by authcoms.
I didn’t know all that, thanks for the explanation
There is also lemmy.sdf.org, I also used to think of mander.xyz.
Edit: sopuli.xyz also looks good imo.
I saw a post in Hexbear saying the protests aren’t against the goverment, but against the US sanctions. So, yes.
