What would Donald Trump have to do for the U.S. media to frame what he is doing in Venezuela as an act of war?

This isn’t a rhetorical question. It’s an actual inquiry, the pursuit of which can reveal a lot about how U.S. media’s default posture is state subservience and stenography. In the past few months, President Trump has committed several clear acts of war against Venezuela, including: murdering — in cold blood — scores of its citizens, hijacking its ships, stealing its resources, issuing a naval blockade, and attacking its ports.

Then in a stunning escalation on early Saturday morning, the administration invaded Venezuela’s sovereign territory, bombing several buildings, killing at least 40 more of its citizens, kidnapping Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife from their bed, and announcing they will, henceforth, “run” the country.

And yet none of these acts of brazen aggression, violence, and violations of international law have, in any sustained or meaningful way, been referred to as acts of war, a coup, or invasion in U.S. mainstream media reporting.

We no longer have a free press. Haven’t for awhile, actually, it’s just painfully obvious now.

It’s a reflection of the lack of working class power in the imperial core. In the past, the capitalist class felt it had to manufacture consent with a sense of democratic rule (it was as false then as it is now).

The lack of any class consciousness has allowed our ruling class to stop using resources to maintain the charade. Why not spend less effort and just declare that we are an Imperialist nation that seeks to exploit the world’s poor? Hell, it might even make stupid right wing reactionaries feel “strong”, as they struggle to pay rent, as long as they get a hard-on for our military.

This invasion is not different from the past Imperialist history of America. The only difference is how plainly they are admitting to it.

Except for all of those outlets who are calling it an act of war. The ones we’re all in here pretending don’t exist for some reason.

He tells it like it is, until he lies. Which is of course all the time. I think conservatards confuse telling the truth with having no filter.

conservatards confuse telling the truth with having no filter.

        This is so correct!

You and I think that the right to free speech means that the government isn’t allowed to prevent anyone from saying what they want and it can’t ban peaceful protests, but conservatives see it from an entirely more self centred perspective.

They confuse free speech with being able to speak freely, which is why they get so mad at people interrupting them out contradicting them, and are prepared to enact censorship to achieve it!

Trump has always wanted us to leave NATO. I think we’re going to get expelled soon with the direction we’re going now.

NATO is literally just another name for the American military. Maybe you’re joking. But, if you’re not, you really don’t understand NATO.

It’s like saying “Germany will be removed from the EU”. It’s literally the heart of it. If America leaves NATO it basically stops existing in any form of what it ever was.

Sure. You could still call it NATO. But it would be like calling McDonalds by the same name if you removed all the non vegan entries from the menu.

The US will never be expelled from NATO unless the US decides it’s time to dissolve NATO for its own political interest.

The EU needs the US because of Ukraine. Their defense industry will take years to develop. Even after, US Nato involvement is free money that the EU doesn’t have to spend.

Besides, the US has been invading and overthrowing countries for decades without NATO saying anything.

Even the blatant 2003 Iraq War was only France refusing their airspace. There was nothing from the EU about dissolving NATO because of US imperialism.

              Okay…?

Kind of gross that you fantasize about repeating history where thousands of civilians die.

EDIT: Look, maybe your intention is that you’re not advocating for this outcome but acknowledging the possibility? But the way I read it sounded like you wanted it to happen, as many Tankies unironically do.

A lot of people are comparing this to the Iraq War, but the thing is the USA had to drum up evidence to provide to US Congress and to the UN and NATO before it ever tried entering Iraq. Bush, Cheney, and the CIA came up with pictures of Aluminium Tubes and claimed they were for developing Nuclear Weapons (supposedly they were actually for Hydro-electric).

What Trump has done is far from anything that a US President has ever done. Do not normalize this.

It wasn’t normal when gwb did it. The shit wing of the party voted for it then and they’ll happily go along with it now for the exact same reasons. I realize he didn’t endorse harris, but trying to rehabilitate the reputation of a war criminal like you’re doing here isn’t going to get him to endorse newsom either.

“There is no truth in the Pravda and no news in the Izvestia” applies just as well to the propaganda heavy present day media in most of the West as it did to the Soviet Union’s.

No one calls it a war when it just starts, that is for the history books. I think modern wars just look very different until the mass killing starts and then it becomes easy again.

Hitler had bombed his own government building and China and Japan had been fighting by 1933.
Honestly we could probably call this already a cold war since it has been using proxies, and kidnappings and select strikes if it never escalates to everyone, bu t I think history will look back at this as a time of war even if we dont say so now.

    Maduro and Trump are friends

Maduro gets to escape his country and save face instead of being assassinated or executed.

Trump gets to manufacture a conflict so he can start martial law and become a dictator, and to distract from us learning he came inside little girls.
