In a third world country that doesn’t care much about individuals torrenting. All 4 ISP we have block Torrent sites but that is easily solved be changing DNS. However, the problem is that we have qouta in here. One gigabyte (home dsl) costs 1.5 pounds, 1 gigabyte on mobile data costs 50 pounds = 1$. You can see the different bundles that two famous ISPs provide which is basically the same in links below: https://eshop.vodafone.com.eg/en/internetServices/dsl/dsl-bundles

Just got massive drives and pushed everything onto them, so my seed to download ratio is 0,21.

Promise to give it all back, though! Already up from 0,19 yesterday, so shouldn’t take too long!

(God bless my VPN for handling it all)

Take our data and don’t be ashamed about not having the privilege of being able to run a seedbox for whatever reason :) We take what we need and provide what we can. Yarr, and fuck US copyright!

Do what you gotta do, no shame.

However, you might find it’s more affordable and practical to rent the cheapest seedbox you can find, then you have basically unlimited bandwidth for seeding, and you only have to worry about downloading from the seedbox once using your local connection.

Even if you only rent one for a few months, you could use that time to build up lots of ratio or bonus points that you can use for freeleech or escaping from hit-and-run penalties.

        I couldn’t live like that o.O last month’s download alone was 500GB.

With me using my desktop remotely all the time and all the other self hosted stuff I’ve exceeded 2TB of upload…

What about streaming? Does nobody use streaming for sports and live tv in your country? Watching 5-6 football matches in UHD would eat through that allowance alone each month at my place.

For football, people use special reciver, they put it on the dish and it doesn’t consume much internet only needed for starting connection, I didn’t use it myself. For movies and series we torrent and share via localsend for example. I might only download one season per month, but I get other stuff from friends. We share what we download even games.

You can still share your data with others! How about burning dvds or filling up thumb drives or external HDDs for all your friends and family? Maybe have them bring their phones and/or laptops over and load them up directly. That would be in the spirit of sharing.

I already do this. Me and my friends, we share everything through phone using localsend even fitgirl games. In fact, that is the only financially feasible solution.

Then in fact you do give back what you take, so, really you’re not a leecher in the first place!

You’re just sharing the data outside the BitTorrent network, and it’s awesome!

If an affordable quota-free plan becomes available someday, then you can seed then. Unfortunately only being able to leech may limit your options in terms of private trackers that require ratio, but popular releases are typically available on public trackers anyhow.

    Thanks for contributing to Lemmy!

I don’t think we would get that. It’s a monopoly you can see from the links that they offer the same bundles.

Never heard of a third world country other than the united states having data caps. Which county is it, if you don’t mind?

I don’t leech entirely but it takes forever to get ratios cuz I can’t port forward through my VPN.

Any good options other than renting out a dedicated VPS and setting that up as a VPN server?

I have storage and speed, I just want an IP that isn’t mine, and I don’t want to have to maintain another box to do it.

Eventually I’ll rent out a vps and setup wireguard…

VPS/VPN and seedbox are not really the same thing. You don’t really have to maintain a seedbox. they’re managed rtorrent instances. Some of them, at the higher end, might be full VPS and support VPN but most of them only have at most a handful of installable addons which are again completely managed for you, especially at the lower end. The $9/month option here has wireguard support so if you’d really rather upload directly from your local connection because you’re sure you have the storage and the speed then that is an option, so go for it I guess.

But that’s really defeating the point of a seedbox anyway. Seems silly to me that you’d really want to do all that uploading and seeding across your local connection, but if that’s your goal, then I guess that’s your goal. I’m not trying to stand in your way, just trying to make sure everyone’s clear on understanding how a seedbox is supposed to work.

I’m aware what a vps is. I’ve rented vps servers to run custom VPN servers to port forward through before. I’d just rather not have to host something myself to get a second IP that isn’t associated with me, and can be port forwarded through.

Especially if I can get it for dirt fuckin’ cheap.

I have an entire as rack at home and a 1gigabit connection.

Why waste money with renting more storage and time by moving the data again?

I’m not looking for a seedbox because all I need is an IP that isn’t associated with me.
