It is in Ford’s best interest to keep other forgien cars out of the US. If Americans were really free to shop forgien cars the US car companies would all go under.
Trump will keep out “bad forgien cars”
Tairiffs are just a cost they pass down to consumers when there are no other options for the consumer other than domestic cars built with tariffed parts.
Silver lining though, cars will get more expensive, which might spur more public transit. Heh… at the very least it will make walkable places a little more desirable.
Oh cars will get more expensive, but you think America will lean towards public transit? Auto manufacturers will just bitch and moan about how they can’t sell their $145,000 entry level sedan, and the government will just bail them out with your tax money.
What, you don’t want to pay $1500 a month for a Ford Focus?
I’m hoping this means we’ll actually get a high speed rail line from Toronto to Quebec City sometime this century instead of just having another shelved study.
That is total bullshit they could build all the parts in the country, preposterous to claim otherwise. The president is a piece of shit, and will ruin ford, but the parts could easily all be made in america, and were all made in america, probably in living memory.
Now everyone is defending neo liberalism because the president co opted anger at so called free trade.
First of all, 1950 is in living memory as I said. Second of all, I dispute that any significant percent was built outside the country before nafta, and I flat out reject that we couldn’t build them all here.
Just because the president co-opted union issues to win the election, planning on doing the exact opposite of what he promised, does not mean you should embrace the opposite and the neo liberal fair trade arguments whereby our labor and environmental standards are undercut by sending jobs to countries without those protections in a race to the bottom. Eliminating those jobs that led to selling their own products in a cycle of economic decline. Canada is not a problem in that regard, although they have an advantage it’s not unfair, because national health insurance.
So where is America getting a lot of their foreign special metals? Last I checked a lot of particular components needed to build modern vehicles literally don’t exist in America.
If you wanted to build just a car from 1968, absolutely you could. But the technology in cars now-a-days comes from materials that literally do not exist in the continental USA. You need to import them. And Canada has a lot of it. So even the suggestion that you don’t need Canada is not only ignorant as hell but completely stupid.
Who said anything about the Raw materials? That is not how made in labels work and you know it. You are throwing around a little gratuitous insults despite you being the one that was despite you being the one that was wrong.
But we could do all the raw materials in the United States as a matter of fact. Ford had a completely vertical operation and produced almost everything in the United States. But I do not know why I’m talking to somebody that called me stupid for challenging his falsehood.
The fact you even think that I called you stupid, rather than the President of the United States stupid, says all I need to know about you. Have a great day.
Ford is complying with dear leader while dear leader is actively fucking Ford by cutting trade with Canada.
I used to work in automotive manufacturing. The amount of parts to build cars cannot come from just America. It’s impossible.
Trump is beating the shit out of Ford and they’re just standing there asking for more.
Parts yes. Cars no.

They know what they are doing.

If people can’t afford cars, they’ll just create subsidies using middle class tax money.
Ford would bitch and moan so American safety regulations would be cut back to help lower costs of cars
Ford doesn’t sell the Focus anymore because the US hates reasonably sized vehicles.

No they weren’t, not since like 1950.
