MINNEAPOLIS — #Unions and community groups gathered in front of the Hennepin County Government Center in downtown Minneapolis, Minnesota, this morning to announce a day of “no work, no school, no shopping” on January 23 to oppose the ferocious assault on the state by federal #immigration authorities.
“We are facing a tsunami of hate from our own federal government,” Abdikarim Khasim, a Minnesota rideshare driver, told the crowd. “We’re going to shut it down on the 23rd. We’re going to overcome this.”

This needs to be national.
What is the government going to do, when millions of Americans suddenly stop paying taxes? Stop going to school? Stop working? Stop shopping?
They can arrest maybe dozens of us because we’re not contributing to the script they jotted in how they think the country should be ran. But, a good month long protest of this will really kick them in the knees. They will understand that they need us to function, because they sure as shit wouldn’t do what we have to in our shoes.
For a national general strike to work you need to get buy-in (ideally pledges) from major trade unions all across the US, as well as non-union organizations due to the very low union membership here in the US. Simply calling for one and then having almost nobody participate would be a disaster and would set the movement back, which is why it’s important to do the work of organizing a coalition to agree ahead of time to participate. The short of it is, if you want this to happen (which I do as well), start selling the idea to the people who need to buy it now and get them talking. The only reason they were able to get this organized so quickly in MN is because of how dire the situation is on the ground, so that everyone asked was immediately on board.
That’s what America needs now and not just for a day, they need to keep it up until things change
Or if our leaders grow a particularly large pair of balls, they could attempt nullification.
Recognize ICE as it stands as unconstitutional, and evict/imprison them for harassing people.
Unilkely
Almost as unlikely as coordinating a national general strike
My username says it all. Let’s organize and do it.
