Seriously wtf was up with that? Why did all of our dads give us this same experience?!
Fixing cars can be frustrating, they were probably just mad and you got caught in it by being there and being conveinient.
Dunno, my dad taught me to fix cars myself and it’s saved me so much money
I ended up taking it upon myself to learn all the handyman things I know. I fix my own vehicles and own a construction company now.
Same. I don’t have a car any more but when i did i was glad my dad taught me mechanical maintenance and how to replace parts. Cars are like computers, just giant lego sets that you can use a chilton manual to disassemble and reassemble. Saved so much money over years doing my own work.
Mine was different. When I wanted to bond with this shit of a male figure by proposing some help, he told me to mind my own business and to go away. He’s still an asshole 30 years later.
Then they complain “kids these days cannot change a tyre!”
Because they irrationally(parents, go figure) expect you to be able to learn by yourself and then they see that you know nothing about the most basic tools/technologies.
I remember my dad teaching me how to start the lawnmower when I was like 8 and then being furious when I had trouble starting it or not knowing what words were or what priming it did n shit. I was fucking eight you dumb fat fuck.
I was sarcastic, actually:) I too expect people to be able to learn basic things on their own. Being able to apply basic school data to real world problems. Read books, look behind someone’s shoulder, discuss maintenance things with friends, etc…
I wasnt calling you a dumb fat fuck, to be clear. I was referring to my father.
Yes, I have understood that.
“Learn on your own” -> proceeds to list things that all rely on other people.
Don’t get me wrong, I understand that the willfully ignorant can get under your skin and I do believe that “self-taught” is a thing (and a valid source of pride) but only as opposed to formal education/apprenticeship.
At the end of the day, the only thing we can really do all on our own is to die alone, cold and hungry. Anything else requires help from others, indirect or direct.
“Learn on your own” -> proceeds to list things that all rely on other people.
Do you understand the concept of logical OR? Here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Logical_disjunction
logic OR, sure, at least on the basic truth-table kind of way. I think I have an idea of what you are implying but I might be too thick to properly understand. Care to expand? ;)
Next sentence was a continuation of the thought and list of different knowledge sources. And you, apparently, expected detalization.
Seriously, everytime the truck needed an oil change.
Mine didn’t
Because they tried to teach you and you didn’t pay attention. So they ridiculed you when you got it wrong so you might pay attention when they tried to teach you the next time. Plus some things seem implicitly obvious when you know them - like that a 10mm wrench is a wrench that says ‘10mm’ on it in tiny embotted letters that are mostly worn out.
Meanwhile Dad’s call the channel locks a “wrench”, the pliers a “wrench”, the adjustable wrench a “crescent wrench”, the socket wrench a “wrench” and the 10mm wrench “cheap piece of shit”.
Yeah well its a bad, borderline moronic teaching technique.
In the biz we call this emotional damage.
My dad and I both sucked at car stuff, but we did our best!
He is teaching you through negative reinforcement 😁
"That’s a Phillips head! I need a regular screw driver! Get me a regular screw driver!"
The vanilla one ffs!
My Father actually raised his back hand to me while working on my High School POS. That was 40 years ago and he’s dead. But, I’ll never forget.
Bonus points if he has ADHD and attempts to describe where he left thinks he left the tool he wants and is angered by how long it took you to find the fucking thing
Don’t forget that they need you to hold the flashlight.
