Seriously wtf was up with that? Why did all of our dads give us this same experience?!

Fixing cars can be frustrating, they were probably just mad and you got caught in it by being there and being conveinient.

I ended up taking it upon myself to learn all the handyman things I know. I fix my own vehicles and own a construction company now.

Same. I don’t have a car any more but when i did i was glad my dad taught me mechanical maintenance and how to replace parts. Cars are like computers, just giant lego sets that you can use a chilton manual to disassemble and reassemble. Saved so much money over years doing my own work.

Mine was different. When I wanted to bond with this shit of a male figure by proposing some help, he told me to mind my own business and to go away. He’s still an asshole 30 years later.

Because they irrationally(parents, go figure) expect you to be able to learn by yourself and then they see that you know nothing about the most basic tools/technologies.

I was sarcastic, actually:) I too expect people to be able to learn basic things on their own. Being able to apply basic school data to real world problems. Read books, look behind someone’s shoulder, discuss maintenance things with friends, etc…

“Learn on your own” -> proceeds to list things that all rely on other people.

Don’t get me wrong, I understand that the willfully ignorant can get under your skin and I do believe that “self-taught” is a thing (and a valid source of pride) but only as opposed to formal education/apprenticeship.

At the end of the day, the only thing we can really do all on our own is to die alone, cold and hungry. Anything else requires help from others, indirect or direct.

Because they tried to teach you and you didn’t pay attention. So they ridiculed you when you got it wrong so you might pay attention when they tried to teach you the next time. Plus some things seem implicitly obvious when you know them - like that a 10mm wrench is a wrench that says ‘10mm’ on it in tiny embotted letters that are mostly worn out.

Meanwhile Dad’s call the channel locks a “wrench”, the pliers a “wrench”, the adjustable wrench a “crescent wrench”, the socket wrench a “wrench” and the 10mm wrench “cheap piece of shit”.

Bonus points if he has ADHD and attempts to describe where he left thinks he left the tool he wants and is angered by how long it took you to find the fucking thing
