This started with dry beans. I also made a pepper sauce for them. Cost wise they are practically break even with the cheapest multi pack of freezer burritos you can buy at 12¢ per ounce. These cost 11¢ per ounce.

But that’s not a fair comparison. These are more beans and cheese per burrito instead of more tortilla.

They are practically gormete compared to the most high end frozen burritos (Amy’s at 59¢ an ounce).

This is a lot of labor. But if you got time and eat a lot of freeze burritos is okay to treat yourself.

Cost per person for this plating: $2.25

I improvised most of it. Make refried beans, make a proper sauce, shred some cheese, assemble, freeze on a baking sheet, bag.

      Here are some of ideas.
Refried beans. I used dried jalapeno peppers I minced up and I added several tablespoons of ground cumin. I think I used about 5 16 ounce jars of pintos that I canned which comes to about a pound and a quarter of dry pintos to start with. I used bacon grease as my fat.

It takes about half a cup of refried beans for an 8 inch tortilla. I wouldn’t use anything larger for freezer burritos. The reheat time is too long otherwise.

Pepper sauce. This is pretty close to what I used. I used some guajillo chiles and some spicier ones for the mix.

About 8 ounces of shredded cheese per 10 burritos.

Make sure you toast your tortillas before assembly so they bend and fold right.

Yeah, pretty curious myself. I’ve tried a few freezer burritos without finding one that really hits the spot for me but damn, I love the idea.

Did you know, around these parts of Canada at least, we dont even have freezer burritos for sale? Let alone suuuper cheap ones?? No the only thing ive seen was frozen taquitos that were imported from the US and dummy expensive, and also terrible… mostly cheapy sauce that evacuates the singular 1mm cube of chicken from the taquito out onto the plate 🤣

Yeah I wish we had more Mexican stuff round here

I know what it’s like to go without proper Mexican. I’m a former resident of San Diego. I have lived in The South for two decades now and finding proper Mexican food is painful. When it comes to taquitos I have exactly the same problem you have. Ridiculously low quality and nasty things that do not count. Nothing like the crispy sticks of joy I know and love.
