Nobody’s gonna buy it, but Motorola gets to say they tried and there just wasn’t a market for GrapheneOS.
1900 euros for 512 gb with no sd card slot. 24-bit/192kHz audio support, but no headphone jack. Why even bother?
I really hope the next generation of Moto G gets graphene support. Somehow their low end phones end up with more useful features than the flagships.
There is no phone on earth that should cost 2000 fucking dollars
Completely wrong target for GrapheneOS. The GrapheneOS demographics, which I belong to, isn’t interested in high-end phones. They want a no nonsense simple phone with lots of storage and security first design.
- fancy AMOLED screen: don’t care
- 5 fancy cameras: don’t care
- super powerful CPU and GPU: don’t care
- storage space: yes please, I have photos and music to store locally!
This will be harmful to GrapheneOS project. It will go like this: no one buys the phone because it’s too damn expensive and full of features the privacy nerds like me don’t care about. Even fewer buy the phone with GrapheneOS pre-installed and it’s a total flop. Motorola stops the partnership saying “we did it and no one wanted it”. No other OEM wants to partner with GrapheneOS after that.
What is the point of a 1900€ phone? What is the target audience? How is it better than a 500€ phone?
Questions more towards Motorola than Graphene, but I doubt the Graphene foundation went into the partnership without knowing what kinds of specific phones would be covered.
For phones like these, which are primarily going to be used by nerds, tech enthusiasts and tinkerers, this is poor launch strategy from Motorola.
Most of the audience for something like this will be turned off by this and all the hype they generated will fizzle out a bit.
They should have started with a mid range launch first, get enthusiasts to rave about it and then upsell these extravagant features to less involved consumers.
What the fuck is the point? Like really what the fuck??? Just make an affordable phone is it really that fucking hard??? Sorry for cruising so much but what the actual fuck??? LiKe is it actually hard to conceptualize common sense now a-days??? Like girl we’re 27 and broke and your telling us not only of we want out of the hellscape of Apple vs Android bullshit we either gotta make out own phone or pay 2k€ for a fucking phone?! FOR A PHONE!!! We’ve only bought 1 new phone EVER only purchased pre-used phones and they’ve all been old and even this “new” phone was old when we got it 😭 we’ve been stuck on this shitty ios phone stuff too fucking long and been waiting for like any good android phone and was looking at this like holy shit finally AND NOW IT’S 2 FUCN K EUROS!!!
Another 5 years on the iPhone 12 mini ig
Signature is their pro max. Just wait for a new “edge” with GrapheneOS support.
Not justifying the price, its stupid expensive. But please don’t act like this will be the only Motorola with GrapheneOS support.
1,900 Euro equals 2,117.10 United States Dollar
There’s no reason for a phone to be that expensive. Laptops are cheaper and they do more wtaf
So it’s going to fail and they’re going to blame Graphene
Looks like it
At least the rumors that it’d be a foldable seem to be wrong.
It’s also initially launching with android 17. The article said that Graphene won’t be ready for it until some time next year. I wonder if the devs are deliberately putting some separation between the hardware launch and OS availability so that they can avoid getting caught up in Motorola’s corporate panic attack when this thing doesn’t sell.
At least the rumors that it’d be a foldable seem to be wrong.
Only priced like one, unfortunately
The foldable is the next one to get support after signature 27.
It doesn’t release with graphene os so that would be stupid, it ships their android.
Not offering a pre-installed GrapheneOS version feels like a misstep. Plenty of people are aware of the brand for security and privacy, and would pay extra to have it pre-installed.
Maybe we will see some re-sellers pop up, but I would prefer direct-from-manufacturer.
Not to mention, they could get the keys right from day one and eliminate (Google’s) “alternate OS is booting” boogieman screen.
Plenty of people are aware of the brand for security and privacy, and would pay extra to have it pre-installed.
This is pure cope, there is no way “plenty of people” are lining up to pay this amount of money for a Motorola phone with a niche operating system.
Just because something isn’t mainstream doesn’t mean it would not make plenty of money.
As was pointed out above, Motorola probably underestimates the casual folks who would pay extra to have GrapheneOS pre-installed, because the GrapheneOS developers are so rabidly against trusting anyone else to do the install.
But many GrapheneOS users just like having a qucik toggle for the microphone and camera.
(Side question: Why the fuck hasn’t such a basic privacy feature made it into basic Android, anyway? Or has it, and I missed it?)
And yes, there’s always a buyer for a phone this expensive. For some people, it will be their only computer for five to ten years, anyway.
They aren’t shipped with GrapheneOS because the developers of GrapheneOS explicitly don’t want this. They dont want any possibility of some backdoor caused by the manufacturer to bring down their reputation.
It not being shipped with GrapheneOS is on purpose.
Yes. I’m waiting for a chill fork of GrapheneOS. I love what the developers have accomplished. LineageOS seems close, but not quite there with features, last I checked.
I was happy with decent default security and privacy in the past, and I could be, again, if it ever returns.
I would be glad to purchase a device from a trusted party, who pre-installed public source code, on open hardware.
I’ll be very pleased if Framework ever releases a phone.
And sure, most people, in general, are clueless, about most things. Point granted.
But the people with a clue about today’s brutal privacy situation want device that is reasonably assured to be respect their wishes, and not chained to the whim of some asshole CEO.
Perfect is lovely. But good enough can still sell very well.
Not having it support tap to pay basically makes it a non starting for selling it.
The amount of stupid selling a phone with out that feature, while the same phone other times it works basically would just cause endless problems.
Yes people are that stupid
What is this obsession with cramming 5+ cameras into phones
I have literally bought a car once for less than this.
(Used and pretty old, but still, a whole fucking car).
Welp. So much for that. Fairphone it is.
Lol. These corporations have lost their fucking minds.
