True, but the whole process can throw wrenches into Russia’s invasion and maybe be a catalyst to get other countries to step up their support as well. The US isn’t the only Western country doing wrong by Ukraine.

At the very least, this publicly puts pressure on Russia. Zelensky can’t just wish the war away or tell Trump what to do, but he can play his best hand.
Let’s say that some papers do get signed and and it makes Russia have to pivot or draws in more support from NATO. Maybe a couple months later Trump roles back those protections. That’s a couple of months closer to Trump’s exit and the hope for a better future system. He’s hopefully lived to fight another day. At worst, talks devolve and the status quo remains the same.

There are citizens that have come to the United States legally that are being deported without due process. Yes that is happening.

Oof yea. I can see how that’s missed. Knowing it’s there, I kind of like the minimalist design. Not ideal for a new user.

That’s weird, and sucks you had that experience. I should take a step back and say that I haven’t used a lot of different districts, including Debian. What I have experienced though, was either a star menu like button either in the bottom left, to left, or a floating dock.
I went full in on Arch when I made my permanent switch a couple of years back to make myself really learn more rather than just plug and play. That may be skewing my perspective some. However, I did throw mint on an old laptop that I have to my brother, and I was shocked that everything was exactly ready to go after install. Libre office, browser, other useful tools, updates, etc. I spent more time verifying things than configuring them and just passed it off.
I know that at least when I install kde in Arch, there are a few different build options from fully loaded to no extra apps. Perhaps with Debian there is a similar selection and you grabbed something stripped down rather than fully loaded? I’m not sure, but it’s good to hear this stuff to check my ignorance when discussing this with people.

I don’t truly understand things like this. Most DE’s are similar enough to Windows that anyone who’s spent a minute on a computer should be able to intuitively get to a web browser to surf the web. That’s what most people do. Word processing and the likes is tough since most are ingrained in Office, but something like (pukes in mouth) Google sheets is decently popular and good enough for most people.
If you give most someone a computer with a browser and auto updates, they’ll be able to do almost everything they are already doing on Windows with minimal thought.
There are exceptions, but those people suck at Windows already, so it’s a moot point. If you can’t find the start menu in Windows, it doesn’t matter what OS you’re using.

She was released and had stories of abuse/torture while in captivity.

As everyone has said, bad idea. But I honestly don’t think it will work, at least not well. I grew up with wood burners and enjoyed many open fireplaces, but the majority of your smoke is just going to go up the flue and out the chimney. There are poor choices you could make to mitigate that loss, but they’re just that, poor choices.

Anecdotally, my closest friends are all senior level tech workers who are fully aware of what reddit did and the current state of everything, but I’m the only person that’s left for Lemmy. They are all still regulars on Reddit. In the same vein, I’ve written off doing business with many companies due to their shitty practice. Other than my sister also dropping Target, I’m the only person that I know that has stopped giving business to shit companies.
So yea, unfortunately the reality is that the vast vast majority of people just don’t care enough change even the smallest of behaviours for ethical reasons. I mentioned something today at my family Christmas that I don’t buy Reign energy drinks anymore because I stopped buying PepsiCo after they rolled back DEI. The response was, “get over yourself”. That’s probably the above average response for most people I know.

It sounds like the Kennedy center needs to cease to exist. It would be better for it not to be there than it would for it to branded by a dictator and presided over by this piece of shit Grenell.
As of right now, the center has no significant value and is a disgrace.

It’s Grindr, almost everything is in the back end.

Wow, you’re a pleasant person. Just a big bowl of rainbows and sunshine.
You didn’t have to write this comment but you did and you look stupid. All you had to do was nothing. Even a monkey can do that.

I agree, but the money has to come from somewhere. Athletes generate the money they are paid, and they generate a lot so they get paid accordingly.
I don’t think that we are equating profit generated as value. It’s just a fact that athletes make lots of money because they generate it.
I think that what should happen is that the organizations/teams that are making billions should be taxed higher or something equivalent and those funds should go to under paid professionals like teachers. But, I don’t think that athletes should make less because there’s enough extra profits that both can exist.

Athletes that have spent thousands of hours training their whole lives to be the some of best in the world at their craft, generate billions of dollars doing their job. Why shouldn’t they get paid well from that pool of billions?
Teachers, nurses, etc should get paid more, but their professions don’t generate the same kind of revenue as the entertainment industry, so that money has to come from some other source, like the government.

I know someone that was 8+ months pregnant live in Asheville when Helene came through. They went over to their neighbor’s brick house as the hurricane caused extreme damage to theirs. The next day it took them a couple hours trying to drive out of the city to get somewhere safe. After they got out, one of them went back to get some possessions the same day and the road they escaped on was gone. Completely washed out and didn’t exist just hours after they drove on it.
In the end, they all survived, but the pregnant lady couldn’t live there anymore, physically due to damage and mentally from the trauma of having been so close to dying during the hurricane. They got the repairs done and moved to Duluth MN and carried a double mortgage until they could sell. They were fortunate to be in a financial position where this was an option, but that’s certainly not the norm. They are bleeding heart liberals that were living in the conservative South who were affected by the shit policies their neighbors voted for and representatives inacted. It’s unfortunate that the innocent bystanders are affected by things like this, but I have little to no sympathy for any conservative that put themselves and others around them in this situation.

Blaming AI is in general criticising everything encompassing it, which includes how bad data centers are for the environment. It’s like also recognizing that the crack the crackhead smoked before robbing your house is also bad.
A company turning off its user base because it’s shoving unwanted AI into it’s product is a lot like a self dick hammering.
Not just the highest bidder. All bidders.
I’ve said it before, but when that headline comes through, I’m going to buy a flag pole, a flag, and raise that thing to the top. I’ll remove all of it after the half staff order ends, but I want everyone that drives by to know just how I feel.
