If you’re patient and can go over budget, an OLED might not be totally out of reach. I snagged a 77” OLED for ~1600 USD earlier this summer (refurb from third party reseller). You might be able to find one close to your budget if you drop down the size a bit.

Funny you mention Ladybird… It’s a commendable project and I hope they succeed. But until it renders 99% of websites, plays Netflix videos, has all the modern features people expect of a web browser and is an actual viable option for non techies… It is really proving the opposite of your point. The fact that an alpha is still years away speaks to how hard this really is.

Some folks here just want to ban ads outright, but don’t stop to think what that would mean. The one that frightens me is what happens to the already crumbling news industry when they additionally lose all advertising revenue? And don’t say subscriptions, because those won’t come close to cutting it. Maybe a couple outlets like the Times could survive, but all the others are going under.
Can anyone recommend any matter based sensors? I too haven’t purchased any devices yet and figured I might as well try to build out with matter to have a single strong network instead of many weaker ones, and aiui matter will likely win out over ZigBee in the long term?

I fully agree with everything you said. I too have contributed countless hours to open source for personal enjoyment or for the good of the community and never been paid a cent.
The thing I lament is this sense I’ve seen in some circles that accepting donations or getting paid is somehow shameful. That the mere act of being compensated somehow diminishes the contribution. You can be paid and do it for the love of coding and do it for the benefit of everyone.
Everyone has the right to refuse payment, and people who do’s wishes need to be respected. And I don’t know the beliefs of the Jellyfin devs. But to me, a post like this feeds into that vague feeling that being paid somehow makes your contributions less “pure” or “desirable”, than if you’re solely doing it for fun or selfless reasons.
It’s my strong belief that for open source alternatives to truly take off and go toe to toe with big tech, there needs to be a robust funding model underpinning it. If we as a community even see accepting donations as somehow “lesser than”, what chance do we have of ever getting there?

Oh for sure. I don’t think anyone is arguing that they don’t have the right to ask people to stop sending them money. But we can still criticize that position. I’m not sure they’ve thought through the message they are sending.
How can costs only be $600 / month. Do they not pay themselves? I guess that’s admirable, but it doesn’t set a good precedent. Will any young developers read this and internalize that they shouldn’t ask for money? OSS maintainers deserve to get paid for their efforts.
Iirc it peaked at around 30% market share. I think IE was around 60% at the time. So never dominant, but definitely very very widespread.
I’m curious, are these hallucinations very prevalent? I’m outside under US so haven’t seen the feature yet. But I have noticed that practically every article references the same glue incident.
So I’m not sure if the hallucinations are happening all the time, or everyone is just jumping on a handful of mistakes the AI made. If the latter, the situation reminds me of how every single accident involving a Tesla was reported on back in the day.
I can think of a couple examples, like leaving the boot loader unlocked on their pixel phones. You might be right though.
Google’s too smart for that. They know there’s a big backlash against AI in the tech savvy crowd and that it’s bleeding users to competitors. So they offer this escape valve that they know the techies will easily find and use, but which 99% of the population will never even look for. This way they can still push AI on almost everyone while at the same time retain as many disgruntled techies as they can.
Not disagreeing with the sentiment… But how is this Reddit’s fault? This is entirely on Google.
I think we’re about 8ft? I’ve heard there’s no minimum really. Basically you don’t want to have to physically turn your head to see either side… But beyond that the closer you are the better you see the picture.
Aiui the distance thing was more back in the day where if you sat too close you’d notice pixels. But with modern resolutions that’s not a problem anymore.
