  • Gramps needed his excel icon - on the monitor I might add - or else. Debloat and activation scripts got him his windows 7 and office 2007 experience back, he was very appreciative of my “hack”, merely for the same experience he paid for back some 15 years.

He doesn’t know what a “Linux” is, but I am greatful that people are still invested enough to make utilities to return back to a more user centric experience in windows - even if I certainly don’t care to go back

  • It does help to know what those funny letters mean. Now we wait for regulators to catch up…

    /tangent

If anything, we’re a very long way from anything close to intelligent, OpenAI (and subsequently MS, being publicly traded) sold investors on the pretense that LLMs are close to being “AGI” and now more and more data is necessary to achieving that.

If you know the internet, you know there’s a lot of garbage. I for one can’t wait for garbage-in garbage-out to start taking its toll.

Also I’m surprised how well open source models have shaped up, its certainly worth a look. I occasionally use a local model for “brainstorming” in the loosest terms, as I generally know what I’m expecting, but it’s sometimes helpful to read tasks laid out. Also comfort in that nothing even need leave my network, and even in a pinch I got some answers when my network was offline.

It gives a little hope while corps get to blatantly violate copyright while having wielding it so heavily, that advancements have been so great in open source.

  • Hey yes, add a person for each person you want to have access, only have yourself as admin that way they wont have direct access to entities.

Now you can use either conditional dashboards, or conditional cards to control what utilities are available to users. For example, my dashboards home screen shows general controls for everyone, but conditionally shows light controls to each user on the same page. I then have myself an admin dashboard with server controls, etc.

For the garage, that was an issue I sought to avoid, a simple automation that closes the garage if it has been opened for too long, and a toggle for that function as well as garage notifications seem to be plenty.

Only one incident where my jerry-rigged Shelly relay remote had the sensor switch miss, and the auto close - thinking the garage was open - opened the garage. I added an error state so that it would attempt to close again and notify if the garage is open after autoclose, which works if its blocked as well. All of this because MyQ doesnt provide local or API access lol

Edit: turns out I may be wrong about entity access, which is a bit of a shame, hopefully we can see that in a future update.

  • If you think the useless appliances are bad, just take a look at more critical connected devices.

I needed some POE security cameras, found some foscam ones on the cheap. Plug them up, go to IP, “install our app”… was pleased to find it allowed a local account without the need for an email, but found that half of my network traffic was comprised of requests to their “ivyIOT AI detection”. I didnt measure what data was going through before sectioning them behind a firewall zone.

My fault for not having looked further into other brands, they were still a bargain and work without issue with my setup, but annoying

Hey I just went through google hell, make sure you are the Nest owner account, the project ID from the cloud page and the project ID from the nest page are whats needed on the last step, and at this part for me it still errored out after the redirect but did integrate nest.

You also as far as I am aware need external access with HTTPS set up, Porkbun was a breeze and I got myself a 10$/y .dev domain, and for that you will need to be able to open ports on your router. Honestly everything networking was easy compared to getting Google to play nice.

Also also its easiest if your browser session only has one Google account logged into it, good luck!
