I recall some checks on regional trains as well, including in Bavaria and I want to say around Berlin but I can’t remember where exactly. Not once were we asked though, all checks were selective and clearly biased
Couple of years ago only they would just check everyone’s id in a rather respectful way. Might depend on the border being crossed?
