I mean, I grew up with a lot of Nazi adjacent people in my small town, and I started discovering covert prejudices pretty young, and did the work to recognize them and work on myself. It wasn’t supported but by one person in my entire family, either. And they didn’t really understand that they were covert racists (the overt racists/homophobics very much knew and were proud of it, harassing some, terrorizing others). Now, if parents were largely unavailable due to work schedule, or harbored c/overt xenophobic attitudes, or a plethora of other socially contrived ills, I could understand. And I understand I’m me, that child is them. I’m trying to comprehend if there were aggravating/mitigating factors. I can’t help it, psychology is immensely fascinating, and still as much art as science.
