When it was the War Department, it only managed the Army, the Navy had its own cabinet secretary & department, and the Air Force was still part of the Army. When it was all military forces were brought under a single department, it got renamed so it didn’t look like the Navy was being made subservient to the Army.
The only change I agree with is department of war. The US doesn’t do defense.
I just call Pete Hegseth the Secretary of War Crimes.

To be fair, yes, it was originally the Dept. of War. It actually is more honest. Even a broken clock is right twice a day, yadda yadda.

It is more about what we want the department to do than what they actually do.
We also don’t officially declare war.
