Ah, the Nothing Ever Happens community not knowing how to look for all the things that are happening.

If you actually tried, you could find a rich tapestry of events, stories, discoveries, and people doing interesting things, it’s that you’ve let large political stories overshadow all of that and are expecting the same level of “Let’s get a streamer reacting to another streamer reacting to a debate between four influencers while subway surfers runs in the corner” level of spectacle.

Make your own spectacle in your head, stop expecting the internet to deliver you dopamine on demand.

Genuinely, this post makes me pissed. I hope OP is a kid or this was an attempt at irony, because adults who feel this way about the world are worthless.

There is never a single second where there isn’t anything interesting happening or to do, but it’s also important to be bored and letting your brain get used to being with just itself.

being bored means that one would has to reflect on themselves… and that terrifies most so they doom scroll instead.

Yes. If you’re desensitized, you’re in a privileged position where the problems don’t affect you. For now.

My living standard fell down heavily even tho I earn a lot more than I used too, cannot travel, have to watch out for promotions on food.

Just over yonder there is an actual war happening as I live in Poland, with one of our neighbours that we know wants to fuck us too, with growing fear of incoming escalation and doubtful allies.

NATO is set to soon fall apart due to USA, EU tries to become more and more like federal goverment, my own country chose nationalistic idiots and only now, slowly, cuts down their influence…

And all that next to “normal” crap like being forced to stay in a workplace I feel hateful of with no prospect of any possibility of having an actual career because I ended up in a dead end job.

I am not priviliged - I am tired. When all I see and hear are bad news, bad becoming worse becomes new normal, new baseline. And sure, it could be worse - war could actually reach us, NATO could dissolve etc., but if your argument for why I shouldn’t be desensitised is literal WWIII then I dunno what to say to you.

    So… apart from everything?

I wish I was bored, rather than worrying about the next atrocity.

You find world news interesting? For me that’s the most boring subject anyone could possibly bring up.

“Oh, Trump’s being a prick again? Didn’t see that one coming. Oh, people are fighting and killing each other again? How surprising. We’re still killing the planet and almost all the most prominent people in the world only care about stock prices? Shocker.”

I’d rather discuss literally anything else.

I’m not the most prolific poster ever, but you’ll notice I’ve not once posted anything about world news.

I also heavily curate my frontpage so as to not see any of this bullshit if possible. Some things slip through but my keyword block list is pretty robust.

I’m just trying to live without a firehose of anxiety inducing shit blasting me in the face every second of the day. Honestly, I’m getting close to shelving Lemmy like I did with all my other social media at this point. Lemmy’s not bad, but I’m really starting to feel like it might be good to disconnect for a while.

I think the point is that it’s interesting in the “this is getting more frightening, we’re at a precipice in human history” sense, not the “wow, now this is a new atrocity” sense. Considering it really is what everyone is focusing on, can they be blamed for wanting the interesting news to be, I dunno, more life affirming perhaps.

Or were we just too bored with the news having to dig for, or contrive, frightening material

There’s plenty of life-affirming news. You just gotta filter for it. There’s whole communities dedicated to it. I strongly recommend curating social feeds. Keyword block lists are a godsend. There’s no politics at all in my Youtube feed because those topics don’t get my click.

You’re not wrong, how I spend my time is ultimately on me, harder to do with the barrel of a gun pointed toward you though, but I’ve found my way around it with video games and friends, sometimes both, I can’t complain too much really, I try to be grateful for anything that isn’t just part of an algorithm
