Apple will eventually notify the occupants of the vehicle that an unkonwn BLE marker is in their proximity for XX time, but, perhaps they won’t find it or know about it. They are pretty fucking stupid.

Sounds like a solid way to endanger yourself. AirTags are registered to accounts whixh lead to people.

It’s a good way to stay reasonably anonymous. Either you have to have and pay for a SIM and the LTE module or take advantage of the apple tracking system.

You think that Apple doesn’t have a database that links the Airtag to a phone/Apple account?

            What are you talking about?

If your phone remembers your airtags, and your phone is linked to an account, then they have a record of that. None of that requires anything encrypted. We’re not talking about tracking anything directly, it’s simply pulling the record that your phone registered the airtag previously.

Realistically, if someone is doing this seriously, they’ll get a burner phone and account. So that wouldn’t really matter because the trail will be cold/difficult to trace back

‘Eventually’? I sometimes get notified about people with AirTags sitting near me on the same train.

There’s almost zero chance they don’t find these in an hour or less, and the precise tracking feature allows you to find exactly where they are.

Considering the tags alone cost about $30 each this would just be an enormous waste of money.

So airtags are useless for securing cars or other important items against theft?

Since the thieves will be notified about the airtag and thus know to look for and toss it?

Their funds are as deep as the administration feels like they are. Probably up to and including armed robbery of citizens at gunpoint if things keep going. Think “nazis ripping fillings out” type of “we need to fund ICE”

While less stealthy, water balloons filled with red paint would probably be more effective, especially if done at a large scale like with the whistles

Wouldn’t the cars just be all red? One or two balloons on each side looks distinctive. A random splash of red on an otherwise dark car.

Hundreds of red paint balloons just looks like a shitty paint job.

The idea COULD work by the hundreds if everybody picked their own color. Then hundreds of balloons would just look like confetti colors on their car, and stand out.

As /u/[email protected] said, I meant hundreds of people marking cars, not hundreds of balloons to mark one car.

It would immediately, visibly, publicly mark that something is up with the car. It would cause them repair bills, even with them renting out cars. And if it went on long enough, they’d probably be banned from renting cars from enough places to give them trouble. And if you hit the windshield (on their parked/stopped cars), you can de facto disable the car which further fucks them over.

I doubt they mean hundreds of balloons at one car, they probably meant a few balloons for each vehicle but hundreds of people carrying balloons and marking hundreds of cars.

Put a bunch of sand in tbe paint balloons and aim for the windshield so they fuck up the wiper blades, and can’t see.

Imagine doing it with an tag that doesn’t scream to other devices of the same company that it exist (AKA: they can’t find it out).
